Typical history when pain is related to occlusion:<br />

Hurts only when chewing<br />

Gets worse with chewing<br />

Gets worse as the day progresses<br />

The patient may have to remove the prosthesis late in the day (discomfort)<br />

Typical history when pain is related to denture base fit:<br />

Problem starts when the patient inserts the denture; it often feels tight or sore<br />

Patient has discomfort even when not chewing<br />

May or may not get worse as the day progresses<br />

Typical history when pain is related to occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) 3, 4 :<br />

Excessive OVD:<br />

Insufficient OVD:<br />

Soreness over entire ridge<br />

Worse during the day (increased occlusal contact)<br />

Dentures ‘click’ when speaking<br />

Feels ‘too full’, difficulty getting lips together<br />

Lack of chewing power<br />

Minimal ridge discomfort<br />

Angular chelitis<br />
