• Ongoing liaison with key stakeholders such as local MPs,<strong>Tourism</strong> Minister’s office and <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Victoria</strong><br />

• Regular media releases <strong>for</strong> regional and metropolitan media to emphasise unaffected areas and activities<br />

• All media releases also sent to network of region’s tourism providers<br />

• Briefings <strong>for</strong> local media regarding impact of the bloom on the tourism sector<br />

• Ongoing monitoring of local and metropolitan media coverage – with timely responses to speculation<br />

or misin<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

Week Three<br />

The blue green algae bloom has worsened and both the local and metropolitan media are focusing on the<br />

impact on commercial fishing and also the effect on natural habitat across the region.<br />

<strong>Tourism</strong> operators and accommodation providers are experiencing a dramatic downturn in visitation, with many<br />

people either assuming the region is unsafe or believing it would be inappropriate to visit in such circumstances.<br />

While the local media is happy to publicise specific details in relation to those many areas and recreational<br />

activities throughout the region that are unaffected by the blue green algae outbreak, the metropolitan<br />

media – when interested – continues to report only the bloom and its implications.<br />

The Incident Control Team reports that given the still and sunny weather conditions, the bloom is likely to<br />

continue <strong>for</strong> several more weeks.<br />

Response<br />

In light of the pessimistic outlook, the TRRG steps up its communications with key stakeholders to stress the<br />

seriousness of the situation and to quantify the tourism impacts, based on feedback from the frontline.<br />

Initial discussions are held to explore whether financial assistance might be available to help the region address<br />

its tourism slump through effective issues management, marketing and promotion through the media.<br />
