Webcast Increases Global Audience for<br />
Investment Expo<br />
By Hil Anderson, senior editor<br />
Sarasota, FL – Allow<strong>in</strong>g people to tap<br />
<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> content of a conference or a<br />
trade show via webcast is a concept<br />
that is work<strong>in</strong>g out well for Inter<strong>Show</strong>,<br />
<strong>the</strong> producers of <strong>in</strong>vestment education<br />
sem<strong>in</strong>ars serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestors and<br />
professional traders.<br />
The Florida based company recently<br />
made 25% of <strong>the</strong> sessions at The <strong>Trade</strong>rs<br />
Expo held <strong>in</strong> New York <strong>in</strong> February<br />
available for view<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> Internet free<br />
of charge. The result was about 6,000<br />
people from 53 nations logg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> to<br />
watch some of <strong>the</strong> 41 <strong>in</strong>dividual sessions<br />
offered at <strong>the</strong> event.<br />
Inter<strong>Show</strong> looks at <strong>the</strong> strategy as a<br />
w<strong>in</strong>ner for its particular market. “It helps<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> number of people exposed<br />
to <strong>the</strong> conference,” said Aaron West,<br />
senior vice president of market<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
Inter<strong>Show</strong>. “This is <strong>the</strong> way conferences<br />
are go<strong>in</strong>g to be function<strong>in</strong>g from here on<br />
out <strong>in</strong> order to provide more benefit for<br />
both exhibitors and speakers.”<br />
On <strong>the</strong> surface, allow<strong>in</strong>g attendees<br />
to tune <strong>in</strong> free of charge sounds like an<br />
ana<strong>the</strong>ma to <strong>the</strong> bottom l<strong>in</strong>es of trade<br />
show organizers who like to see people<br />
pay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> registration fee and talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess face-to-face with <strong>the</strong>ir exhibitors.<br />
Inter<strong>Show</strong>, however, caters to a different<br />
type of audience than most <strong>in</strong>dustryspecific<br />
events.<br />
Inter<strong>Show</strong> events are <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />
free of charge and target an audience<br />
of f<strong>in</strong>ancial traders who are less able to<br />
step out of <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial markets for <strong>the</strong><br />
better part of a week <strong>in</strong> order to attend<br />
sem<strong>in</strong>ars <strong>in</strong> person. By utiliz<strong>in</strong>g webcasts,<br />
Inter<strong>Show</strong> aims to drive more viewers<br />
to its Moneyshow.com website as well<br />
as to educational sessions and product<br />
demonstrations.<br />
“Our goal is to educate <strong>in</strong>vestors and<br />
traders as much as we can,” said West. “It<br />
is to get <strong>the</strong>m to connect with <strong>the</strong> website<br />
and learn how to trade from <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
experts who come and present at <strong>the</strong><br />
Strength <strong>in</strong> Numbers. Webcasts, such as this one, made 25% of <strong>the</strong> sessions at The <strong>Trade</strong>rs Expo<br />
available free of charge to remote viewers. The organizers sees webcasts as a way to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong><br />
exposure of <strong>the</strong>ir events to office-bound f<strong>in</strong>ancial traders.<br />
conferences. They realize <strong>the</strong>re are some<br />
great resources available on Moneyshow.<br />
com.”<br />
The logistics of <strong>the</strong> webcast operation<br />
are fairly simple. Inter<strong>Show</strong> developed its<br />
own web <strong>in</strong>terface that allows sessions<br />
to be captured live with a video camera<br />
and <strong>the</strong> hotel-provided sound mixer.<br />
Both are plugged <strong>in</strong>to a laptop computer<br />
connected to <strong>the</strong> Internet. At The <strong>Trade</strong>rs<br />
Expo, <strong>the</strong>re were three conference rooms<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g webcast simultaneously throughout<br />
<strong>the</strong> conference.<br />
The sessions were broken up <strong>in</strong>to<br />
two categories: editorial presentations<br />
and product presentations. The product<br />
presentations are “purchased” by <strong>the</strong><br />
exhibit<strong>in</strong>g companies who are given <strong>the</strong><br />
opportunity to pay an additional fee<br />
to have <strong>the</strong> session webcast to a larger<br />
audience. “They can <strong>the</strong>n use it for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
sales collateral or <strong>in</strong>ternal purposes as<br />
well,” West said. “If <strong>the</strong>y go to a show for<br />
three days, <strong>the</strong>y can leverage <strong>the</strong> time <strong>the</strong>y<br />
had at <strong>the</strong> show and use <strong>the</strong> content for a<br />
much longer period.”<br />
Editorial presentations feature speakers<br />
who are often regulars on <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
speak<strong>in</strong>g circuit. Many of <strong>the</strong>se speakers,<br />
<strong>in</strong> fact, are able to assist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g<br />
by putt<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> word to <strong>the</strong>ir regular<br />
readers or attendees of past speak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
engagements. “Speakers tell <strong>the</strong> people<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir database <strong>the</strong>y are go<strong>in</strong>g to do a<br />
webcast and <strong>the</strong>ir constituents can log on<br />
and watch for free,” West said. “We do <strong>the</strong><br />
same th<strong>in</strong>g with our database.”<br />
Many conferences and trade<br />
shows have adopted a practice of<br />
archiv<strong>in</strong>g webcasts on <strong>the</strong>ir show sites<br />
as a means of extend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir events. Inter<strong>Show</strong> also keeps its<br />
content available to act as a draw for<br />
exhibitors, speakers and <strong>the</strong> conference<br />
itself. “For a lot of people who are tied to<br />
an office, it can be difficult to come to a<br />
conference,” West said. “But this allows<br />
us to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to build <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> what we<br />
are do<strong>in</strong>g and market to <strong>the</strong>m for future<br />
shows.”<br />
