NYC’s Pier 94 to<br />
Expand; Seeks Mid-<br />
Sized <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Show</strong>s<br />

New York, NY - New York City’s Pier 94<br />
will be expanded to 355,000 square feet<br />
of exhibit and conference space under<br />
a plan announced April 23 by <strong>the</strong> New<br />
York City Economic Development Corp<br />
(NYCEDC).<br />
Merchandise Mart Properties,<br />
Inc. (MMPI) and its parent company,<br />
Vornado Realty Trust, will carry out <strong>the</strong><br />
redevelopment and expansion of <strong>the</strong><br />
property. The companies will <strong>the</strong>n lease<br />
<strong>the</strong> property for 49 years with two 25-year<br />
extensions.<br />
“This new, expanded facility will<br />
enable us to accommodate more of <strong>the</strong><br />
mid-sized trade shows that we know<br />
want to come to New York City,” said<br />
Seth P<strong>in</strong>sky, NYCEDC president.<br />
Pier 94, located on Manhattan’s<br />
West Side, currently features 175,000<br />
square feet of prime exhibit space<br />
and plays host to a number of events,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g components of <strong>the</strong> multivenue<br />
New York International Gift Fair,<br />
The Armory <strong>Show</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Architectural<br />
Digest Home Design <strong>Show</strong>. Current events<br />
booked at Pier 94 will cont<strong>in</strong>ue dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
construction.<br />
“Convention bus<strong>in</strong>ess, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g trade<br />
and consumer shows, last year drew nearly<br />
4 million visitors to <strong>the</strong> city and <strong>in</strong>jected<br />
$4.32 billion <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> local economy,”<br />
P<strong>in</strong>sky said. “This new, expanded facility<br />
will allow us to w<strong>in</strong> a greater share of this<br />
multi-billion dollar bus<strong>in</strong>ess.”<br />
P<strong>in</strong>sky said <strong>the</strong> expanded facility would<br />
host an estimated 40 trade shows and draw<br />
300,000 attendees annually <strong>in</strong> 2013.<br />
The $100 million project will<br />
expand <strong>the</strong> Pier 94 facility to <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong><br />
neighbor<strong>in</strong>g Pier 92. A 60,000 square-foot<br />
logistics center will be located on Pier<br />
92 and will accommodate load<strong>in</strong>g and<br />
unload<strong>in</strong>g as well as storage and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
back-of-<strong>the</strong>-house functions.<br />

Inc. (TMG) as its<br />
new management<br />
firm. The association<br />
will be run out of<br />
TMG’s office <strong>in</strong><br />
Alexandria, Va.<br />

TMG was selected <strong>in</strong> an extensive<br />
search process. Former CIC President<br />
Mary Power announced her resignation<br />
a year ago. (See <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Show</strong> <strong>Executive</strong>,<br />
The Vault, May 29, 2007).“Based<br />
on our strategic plann<strong>in</strong>g process<br />
begun <strong>in</strong> December 2007, <strong>the</strong> board<br />
identified <strong>the</strong> key attributes needed<br />
<strong>in</strong> our management partner,” said<br />
Brenda Anderson, chair of <strong>the</strong> CIC<br />
board. “TMG exceeds <strong>the</strong>se required<br />
parameters.”<br />
TMG manages 22 national and<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational associations. “We<br />
are honored to serve CIC and, by<br />
extension, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry,” said Gregg<br />

APEX (Accepted Practices Exchange)<br />
programs for exhibition <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
professionals. There are over 14,000<br />
professionals worldwide with <strong>the</strong> CMP<br />
designation. The CIC is also well known<br />
for its Hall of Leaders award gala, which<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes recognition pavilions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Walter Wash<strong>in</strong>gton Convention Center<br />
<strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC and McCormick<br />
