Kleertech and <strong>the</strong> Vanish<strong>in</strong>g Name Tag<br />

Kleertech, a producer of biodegradable<br />

products for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, received<br />

a <strong>2008</strong> Innovation Award from <strong>Trade</strong> <strong>Show</strong><br />

<strong>Executive</strong> for offer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ultimate <strong>in</strong><br />

disappear<strong>in</strong>g name badges for greenm<strong>in</strong>ded<br />

trade show organizers.<br />

The St. Louis-area company unveiled<br />

its BIOTECH Badge System (patent<br />

pend<strong>in</strong>g) at <strong>the</strong> IAEE EXPO! EXPO!<br />

last December. Its 100% biodegradable<br />

nature could make it <strong>the</strong> ultimate answer<br />

for show organizers seek<strong>in</strong>g to cut down<br />

on <strong>the</strong> amount of long-last<strong>in</strong>g trash<br />

produced at <strong>the</strong>ir events.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> lanyards to <strong>the</strong> clips, <strong>the</strong><br />

BIOTECH badge will completely break<br />

down and disappear with<strong>in</strong> a few months<br />

of be<strong>in</strong>g produced, leav<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

not even <strong>the</strong> smallest traces of plastic<br />

or metal. “It is a totally biodegradable<br />

event ID consist<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> holder, <strong>the</strong><br />

attachment and <strong>the</strong> lanyard,” said Scott<br />

McKye, owner of Kleertech.<br />

The base material for <strong>the</strong> badge is<br />

polyactide, a corn sugar biopolymer<br />

that will break down <strong>in</strong> fewer than 120<br />

days. The metal clips have been replaced<br />

with a biodegradable plastic while <strong>the</strong><br />

plastic cover is an oxo-biodegradable<br />

polyethylene or polypropylene that can<br />

last as long as five years or disappear<br />

<strong>in</strong> a month. The lanyard is also made<br />

from corn-based plastic fiber. Throw <strong>in</strong><br />

some eco-friendly <strong>in</strong>k and organizers will<br />

have all of <strong>the</strong>ir bases covered so far as<br />

protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> environment.<br />

All <strong>the</strong> materials have been<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependently verified with a K<strong>in</strong>etic<br />

Assay analysis by an ASTM certified lab <strong>in</strong><br />

St. Louis.<br />

Kleertech says it has a number of<br />

related biodegradable products for <strong>the</strong><br />

events <strong>in</strong>dustry com<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>the</strong> pike.<br />

The BIOTECH badge is an <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

way to get <strong>the</strong> ball roll<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
