First Peoples House of Learning, located in Enweying building on the main Symons campus,<br />

provides student services for indigenous students throughout the university. Student space is<br />

provided in Ska’nikonhra, Benedict Gathering Place, located on the lower floor of Enweying, and in<br />

Nendimowin: Elders and Students Centre, located in Enweying 322 which also provides access to<br />

computer, telephone and fax services.<br />

Foundations of Indigenous Learning<br />

Students of Indigenous heritage from all disciplines are welcome to take Foundations of Indigenous<br />

Learning INDG 1010Y. In this course, facilitators accompany students on their learning journeys.<br />

Students are given an opportunity to learn while utilizing their emotional, mental, physical, and<br />

spiritual selves. The course focuses on acquainting students with <strong>academic</strong> skills, while also<br />

engaging students in the process of learning about and developing their individual talents, lessons<br />

to be learned, their world views, and their sense of self-worth.<br />

Access and Advocacy for Indigenous Students<br />

<strong>Trent</strong> <strong>University</strong> provides access for individuals of Indigenous heritage through the Foundations of<br />

Indigenous Learning Diploma. This program is offered through the Indigenous Studies program in<br />

collaboration with Indigenous Student Services. Advocacy is available for any Indigenous student<br />

needing to connect with a department or service within the university.<br />

Naadimaagewin Program<br />

The Naadimaagewin program offers a variety of group and individual <strong>academic</strong> supports for<br />

students. Workshops are held throughout the year on topics such as Time Management, Essay<br />

Writing and Exam Stress. Individual <strong>academic</strong> help is available through the Indigenous Student<br />

Counsellor, who can arrange for tutors from any of the departments on campus for students in<br />

need of specific course support. The program also offers cultural workshops during the year.<br />

Cultural Advisor<br />

The Cultural Advisor provides a variety of services to support enhanced awareness and<br />

understanding of contemporary and traditional Indigenous issues within the university community.<br />

Cultural events, traditional activities and workshops are presented throughout the <strong>academic</strong> year.<br />

The Advisor acts as the primary department liaison for the Elders and Traditional Peoples Gathering<br />

each February. Culture-based counselling is available.<br />

Indigenous Student Counsellor/Academic Advisor<br />

The Indigenous Student Counsellor is available to all Indigenous students at the <strong>University</strong>. The<br />

Counsellor provides culturally sensitive counselling for issues regarding university life and <strong>academic</strong>s<br />

as well as personal problems that arise as a result of school or other life experiences. Appointments<br />

and referrals to long-term counselling can be arranged. Advocacy for students with their professors<br />

or other university departments is also available. The counsellor also provides <strong>academic</strong> advising for<br />

degree planning, petitions and other requirements.<br />

<strong>Trent</strong> <strong>University</strong> Native Association (TUNA)<br />

Since 1969 TUNA has provided a voice for students within the Indigenous Studies program and<br />

for Indigenous students throughout the university. It is a body organized by, for and about <strong>Trent</strong>’s<br />

Indigenous student population. All are welcome to join and participate. TUNA organizes various<br />

cultural, social and recreational events throughout the year and provides a forum to discuss and deal<br />

with issues affecting Indigenous peoples. TUNA can be contacted by e-mail at tuna@trentu.ca. The<br />

TUNA office is located in First Peoples House of Learning, Enweying 322.
