HIST 5117H – Muslim women, Islams and feminisms in the 20th-21st centuries<br />
This course has two objectives: first, to study the history of diverse Islams and feminisms from<br />
misogynistic exegeses of the Quran through the colonial period to today’s articulation of secular and<br />
Islamist feminisms; second, to explore trends in western scholarship on Muslim women from the<br />
18th century through to the contemporary era. Fields: Colonialism and Conflict, Social and Cultural<br />
History, Regional and Trans-National History.<br />
HIST 5118H – Themes in Canadian History<br />
This course gives students a solid grounding in the broad sweep of Canadian history. New<br />
approaches and recent disciplinary and interdisciplinary debates will be explored, focussing on such<br />
themes as labour and the working class; politics and the state; diplomacy and business; society, race,<br />
culture and gender; and white-aboriginal relations. Fields: Canadian History, Social and Cultural<br />

HIST – CSID 5202H – Approaches to the study of culture in Canada<br />
The course investigates some of the major approaches that have been used to investigate and<br />
comprehend Canadian culture. Topics include “high” culture, popular culture, media, intellectual<br />
traditions, visual culture and cultural transgressions. Fields: Canadian History, Social and Cultural<br />
History.<br />
HIST – CSID 5301H – Policy, economy and society: themes in the state and political economy<br />
of Canada<br />
This course will look at the complex web of relationships linking the economy, business, politics, the<br />
state, civil society and public policy in Canada and their interaction with social, political, and cultural<br />
life. Fields: Canadian History, Social and Cultural History.<br />
HIST 5500 – Major research paper (MRP)<br />
The major research paper MRP will be modelled on a scholarly journal article. The MRP must address<br />
a specific analytical research question and make an original contribution in at least two of the<br />
following three areas: theory/theoretical framework, historiographical analysis or work using original<br />
data.<br />
HIST 5901H – Reading course<br />
A course designed to provide opportunities for intensive study by an individual student in a particular<br />
field of the program. Approval of the relevant instructor and the department’s graduate committee<br />
is required.
