12. Indian Rubber Manufacturers Research Ass. (IRMRA), Maharashtra: IRMRA with its state of the art
facilities is extending their co-operation for the cause and concentrates upon development of rubber
products using both Natural Rubber and Synthetic Rubber and testing the same. IRMRA is a Cooperative
Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (Affiliated to Ministry of Commerce & Industry,
Govt. of India) engaged in rendering technical services to Rubber and allied materials and accredited by
ISO-9001.
On the academic front, institutions like Pune University houses the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy &
Astrophysics (IUCAA), National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), TATA Institute of Fundamental
Research (TIFR), and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) which, are emerged as
centres of excellence in their specific areas. Institutions like Ferguson College and the dozen or more
engineering and medical institutions have also made substantial contribution.

• Programmes
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has developed two industrial estates in the
immediate vicinity of Pune. In the MIDC industrial estates land, fuels, electricity, water and selected raw
materials are provided at subsidised rates to priority sector productions/companies. Suitable transport and
communication facilities are also offered. Thus the requisite infrastructure is made available and other
conditions are being made favourable for efficient and qualitative industrial productions. In the year 2000,
based on the huge potential in the city, MIDC also launched Pune Info-tech Park. The project was a huge
success with the campus being fully booked in just a span of 18 months. Spurred by the huge demand, MIDC
is now launching the second phase of Pune Info-tech Park spanning 600 acres. The constant efforts of
organisations like the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) which, try to convert small but potentially
cities, has paid off with Pune making its presence felt as a serious contender in the Indian software race. As
well two (2) additional programmes were developed:
1. Warana Nagar Programme: The Warana Co-operative Complex has become famous as one of the
forerunner of successful integrated rural development resulting from Co-operative movement. The Warana
Co-operative Sugar factory registered in 1955, has led this movement resulting in formation of over 25
successful co-operative societies today.
2. Back-bay Reclamation Scheme: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority was appointed
in 1983 as a Special Planning Authority at South Mumbai.

Pune's ability to carve and retain a niche for itself can be benchmarked to the three solid brands it established
for the country: PARAM, INDICA and BAJAJ:-
a. PARAM is a word meaning 'supreme'. It is also a handy acronym for parallel machine. a computing
platform that divides a large job into manageable chunks and then assigns them to a number of processors
working in parallel fashion to achieve very high speeds of operation. The Pune-based Centre for
Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) unveiled "PARAM 10000", marking the culmination of its
decade-long mission to take India into the tiny club of nations which build their own supercomputers.
b. INDICA TATA Engineering has registered the highest ever sales of 8,769 units of its small car INDICA in
March, a 67 per cent jump over sales of 5,284 units in March 2001. With this, the cumulative domestic sales
39
