Infrastructure
Over the years Gujarat has been able to develop an overall infrastructure network conducive for fast industrial
growth. More than 90% of the villages of Gujarat are connected by commutable roads and as many as 3
National Highways and many State Highways connect important industrial locations in the State to all the
major cities in India. Gujarat is also connected to all metropolitan and other major cities in India through
broad railway lines. Gujarat has the largest number of Airports (10) and also the largest number of ports (41)
in the country, which enables easy global accessibility. The demand-supply gap in the power sector has been
considerably reduced over the years. To cater to the rising demand of energy, the power sector was made open
for private investment. Non-conventional energy resources are also being commercially exploited. A 10 MW
wind farm (PAVAN SHAKTI) was established in Gujarat to compensate for the shortages.
The GIDC operates and maintains industrial estates in various districts of Gujarat State. These estates are selfcontained
and capable of sustaining a large number of industries within themselves. Gujarat State is divided
into "Districts" which are further sub-divided into "Talukas". GIDC has planned for 274 Industrial Estates of
which 168 are developed and functional.
The Gandhinagar-Sarkhej highway, on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, is an addition and has facilitated a
definite shift in commercial space, from the congested Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits to
areas outside the municipal limits.
To meet the water demands for domestic and industrial purposes, the State Government has taken many steps
including the ambitious SARDAR SAROVAR Project

How Did Vadodara reach this growth?
The infrastructure, innovation systems, related institutions and the available entrepreneurship spirit are all
elements that contributed to the dynamic development of Gujarat and Vadodara.
Infrastructure facilities such as development of port with bulk handling facilities, setting up of container depot
near major industrial towns, facilities for product testing and development and encouraging small and medium
units for adoption of total quality management and ISO certification are some of the steps the Government
already undertook for the promotion of export from the State.
