Abwehr Activities in Irag(V3)<br />
a. Introduction<br />

Irag had been a center of German Abwehr activities for some time.<br />
In 1941, the former Iraqui minister, Rashid El Gailani, strated a revolution.<br />
He was aided in this by the German consul, Graba, who sent assistance<br />
in the form of three Abwehr II men, Hptm Kohlhaas, Upfz Brass and<br />
Upfz Krautzberger. The revolution failed and resulted in the hasty withdrawal<br />
of the German military and Abwehr missions.<br />
Many prominent citizens left the country at that time and went to<br />
s.-5 ) Germany, where, encouraged by the Abwehr, the continued intriguing against<br />
the Iraqui,government. Most notorious of El Gailani's supportersin this<br />
respect were Hassan El Hinoi,_who became an Italian agent after his negotiations<br />
with the GIS failed in 1942, Mahmud Salmat, a major in the Iraqui<br />
air force and assistant to El Gailani, and Abdullahad Daoud.<br />

b. Aldullahad Daoud.<br />
Daoud was an optician from BAGDAD and used the cover name of Domath<br />
in his tra*elsAhrough'the Balkans. He became an Abwehragent,doinean<br />
extensive black , market-businees at the same time and continuallrgettinginto<br />
trouble because of his financial transactiOnt. 'Daoud had inflUenbe with<br />
the'lraqui-prime minister, Pachachi, but on the other h4nd-iwas not popular<br />
with either-the : Grand Mufti or El Gailani, : perhaps for religious reasons.<br />
