I loved discussing seminar topics with them, hearing their opinions, experiences, and ideas...but most of all I loved just spending time with them and getting to know them so well. It was a great opportunity to spend time with and learn from really remarkable people!” Member of the Class of 2012 (excerpt from anonymous post-Institute survey/evaluation) Featured Speakers/Programs August 2009 n Todd Etter (Jefferson Scholar 1990) returned for his “Improvisational Comedy” session and also led a second session that was a combination scavenger hunt, brainteaser, and team-building exercise. n Shelley Boyce, U.Va. alumna and founder and C.E.O. of MedRisk, spoke at the Institute’s opening dinner. n Chip Ransler, a graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences and the Darden School of Business, presented a session on his new company, Husk Power Systems, an alternative energy company that provides electricity to rural areas throughout India in a financially sustainable, scalable, and environmentally friendly way. n University Professors Tom Bateman, Ed Freeman, Marcia Pentz, and John Portmann all led sessions. Their subjects included ethics, public speaking, and the concept of envy. n Scholars spent one week volunteering in the Charlottesville community in partnership with the Albemarle Housing Improvement Project. Members of the Class of 2012 perform service work with the Albemarle Housing Improvement Project during their Institute for Leadership and Citizenship, Summer 2009. 101
