not geographically eligible to nominate, as<br />

well as international students and qualified<br />

applicants to the University’s Engineering,<br />

Architecture, and Nursing schools, 101 finalists<br />

were brought to Charlottesville for an<br />

introduction to the University and a series<br />

of exercises and interviews. Of these, 27 new<br />

<strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong> will make up the Class of<br />

2014.<br />

Candidates for <strong>Jefferson</strong> Fellows undergo<br />

a slightly different selection process. The<br />

Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the<br />

Darden School of Business, the School of<br />

Law, and the School of Engineering and<br />

Applied Science all nominate their most outstanding<br />

applicants. The <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong><br />

<strong>Foundation</strong> then invites selected candidates<br />

to Charlottesville to meet with prospective<br />

faculty mentors and University graduate<br />

students. Because special consideration is<br />

given to students who show an eagerness to<br />

share important ideas with a wide audience,<br />

many are asked to give a presentation or participate<br />

in a group exercise.<br />

In 2009-10, 56 candidates accepted invitations<br />

to compete and 6 will enroll in the<br />

University as <strong>Jefferson</strong> Fellows.<br />
