jefferson scholars foundation 2010 Although the Fellows are older and have mapped out an individual course of study, the Foundation nonetheless strives to foster their engagement with the University community. During the annual selection weekend, each second-year Fellow presents his or her research, an experience intended to give Fellows the opportunity to render original work for critical feedback in a public setting. Fellows also engage in a team-building exercise at the start of the year, host monthly meetings, and work throughout the year on a major interdisciplinary conference that is hosted by the Foundation. a private partnership in the public interest Since its inception, public-private partnerships have provided the University with its margin of excellence and ensured that it continues to foster the “informed citizenry” that Jefferson considered “the bulwark of democracy.” The Jefferson Scholars Foundation is an excellent example of this partnership. Thanks to the foresight and commitment of generous benefactors, the Foundation has steadily enhanced its undergraduate program and launched a flourishing fellowship program. Their contributions were instrumental in creating a new home for the Foundation, a complex of three Chris Belyea (the Warren W. Hobbie Scholar) and Ian Czekala (the Olive B. and Franklin C. Mac Krell Scholar), both the Class of 2010, pose victoriously after completing the Marine Corps Marathon. buildings that reinterprets Jefferson’s architectural principles for the twenty-first century. In addition to housing the Foundation’s offices, this 32,700 square-foot facility provides Jefferson Fellows with ample space for teaching and research and permits the Foundation to sponsor a variety of activities for the University community that only could be imagined before. As the Foundation enters its 30th year of service, Jefferson Scholar and Fellow alumni are strengthening our democracy by applying not only their talents but also the lessons of leadership and citizenship they gained while at the University, to the benefit of the nation and the world. Our current and future Scholars and Fellows will be well prepared to join them in their turn. 26
