the fellows
jefferson dissertation year fellowship
In November 2009 the Foundation’s Board of
Directors approved an initiative to fund a
series of graduate dissertation year fellowships
in conjunction with the Graduate
School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS). These
fellowships will help students complete their
dissertations on time and increase their
chances for success in the always competitive
academic job market. The Foundation’s
overarching Fellowship goal is to strengthen
our nation’s colleges and universities by
enabling the most highly qualified young
people to join their faculties.
In addition to the academic criteria the
GSAS committee uses to select recipients of
its dissertation year fellowships, the Jefferson
Dissertation Year Fellowship committee will
seek graduate students who embody the
characteristics of the Jefferson Fellowship
and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation. These
characteristics include:
n An exceptional academic record
n An unquestioned interest, potential, eagerness,
and capacity to share their knowledge
with a broad audience
n Intellectual depth and curiosity, leadership
skills, teaching potential, thirst for knowledge,
and an ability to communicate
effectively
n A desire to work in an environment where
shared ideas among a group of pan University
leading thinkers strengthens and informs
more narrowly defined scholarship
Requirements of the Jefferson Fellowship
include:
n Maintaining and using regularly an
assigned office at the Jefferson Fellows
Center
Andrew T. Kennedy, the inaugural Jefferson Arts
& Sciences Dissertation Year Fellow.
n Presenting at the Jefferson Fellows
Symposium
n Attending regular Jefferson Fellows
activities and events
The inaugural Jefferson Dissertation Year
Fellowship, endowed by an anonymous
benefactor, was awarded to Andrew Kennedy
from the Chemistry department. Mr. Kennedy
has a distinguished record. He was named an
honoree for the Seven Society Graduate
Fellowship for Superb Teaching (2008) and
received the Frank Finger Graduate Teaching
Fellowship for stimulating and organized
classroom teaching (2008). He was presented
the Chemistry Award for the highest cumulative
four-year average in concentration
subjects in the chemistry program. He studies
the role of lipids in regulating the cell life
cycle, research that may help transform
cancer from an often fatal disease into a
chronic, manageable condition.
