Turner Award for Best Essay of the Year in the Journal of African American Review JAMES ANTHONY VILLARRUBIA Presidential Management Fellowship Accepted into the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry 2009 BRENDAN WOODARD HART Received a technical recognition award as the designer of hydrogen removal facilities for exported OxO alcohol products MELISSA SUE RAGAIN (Graduate Fellow) Critical Studies Residency at the Core Program, sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (2010-11) growth of the alumni internship program Five years after its inception, the Alumni Internship Program saw even more interest from both alumni and third-year Jefferson Scholars. A number of members of the Class of 2011 elected to take advantage of this opportunity. They include: n James Rogers and Sarah Touse accepted internships with McKinsey and Co. and spent the summer working with the eight Jefferson Scholar alumni affiliated with the Atlanta office. n James Rogers interned during the academic year at Investure, the Charlottesville financial firm where Clay Thomson (Class of 1996) is a director. n Lynne Kolodinsky spent six weeks working with Maria Pulzetti (Class of 1999) in the Capital Habeas Unit of the Federal Defender’s Office in Philadelphia. n Lauren Groetch worked with Kevin Simowitz (Class of 2008) as an intern at the Virginia Organizing Project. n Warren Mackie-Jenkins spent most of his summer researching rural health in South Carolina with Dr. Paul DeMarco (Class of 1985). n Lee Eschenroeder spent his summer at “Primeros Pasos,” a health clinic in Guatemala founded by Brent Savoie (Jefferson Fellow alumnus, Law ‘07). n Greg Siegel secured an internship with Applied Predictive Technologies in Northern Virginia, where he worked with Guru Raj (Class of 2004) and Dean de la Peña (Class of 2008). 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 Alumni Interested 29 44 69 111 225 Scholars Interested 11 17 18 18 24 Actual Internship Matches 2 3 6 3 7 12
alumni alumni advisory committee 2009–10 The Alumni Advisory Committee held its fourth annual meeting on April 24, 2010, in Charlottesville. Discussion focused around the 30th reunion in October 2010. Thirteen new members joined the committee this year, replacing the representatives from each of their respective classes whose terms of service concluded in 2009.
