Tullis Scholar, Class of 2012 Lily, Alex, and Christiana were part of a JPC group that traveled to Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, and worked for three weeks alongside doctors and patients at the Inner Mongolia Medical College to develop a methodology for assessing a new Grand Aides healthcare initiative. Their goal was to gather baseline healthcare data that will be used to determine whether or not the current healthcare system in Hohhot will be significantly improved by the Grand Aides program. Water and Health in Limpopo RACHEL SMITH George Lewis Scholar, Class of 2013 Rachel was part of a JPC group that focused on improving access to safe water and sanitation services in the villages of Tchibvumo and Tshapasha in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Their research studied prior water schemes and sought to determine best methods for providing adequate clean water to the villages. Lee Wilson Scholar, Class of 2010 SARAH MUNFORD Norfolk Academy Scholar, Class of 2011 Kappie and Sarah were part of a JPC group that traveled to the Gulu region of northern Uganda to study how women can be economically and socially empowered in a post-conflict area. Working with Heifer International’s (HI) Women in Livestock Development program (WiLD), the students conducted research through observations, interviews, and focus groups and worked to institute a women’s community development group in the region.
the scholars faculty advisory committee to the undergraduate program 2009 -10 Chaired by Maurie McInnis (Jefferson Scholar Class of 1988), the newly appointed associate dean for undergraduate academic programs at the University, the Faculty Advisory Committee for the Undergraduate Program consists of faculty members who will assist the Foundation in two specific ways. They will: 1) aid in recruiting new Jefferson Scholars by meeting with finalists during Selection Weekend, serving on faculty panels or as seminar leaders, and following up afterwards with those finalists with whom they had significant interaction; 2) provide current Jefferson Scholars with better access to faculty, particularly people to whom they can turn for informal advising. The group had its first meeting in February to map out a plan for the year. The following faculty members have agreed to join the committee: MAURIE D.
