david lane
In October 2010, Scholars and Fellows gathered for an enrichment luncheon with U.Va. alumnus
David Lane (Col ’82), president and chief executive officer of ONE, an advocacy and campaigning
organization focused on combating global poverty and preventable disease, with more than 2
million members from around the world. Prior to joining the team at ONE, Lane was the director
of public policy and external affairs and director of the east coast office (located in Washington,
D.C.) for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He also served in a number of senior positions in
the federal government, including executive director of the National Economic Council at the
White House and chief of staff of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Lane spoke with Scholars
and Fellows about the importance of advocacy and campaigning and shared some memorable
stories about his travels around the world.
In April 2010, Scholars heard remarks from
Jefferson Scholar alumnus Brady Lum,
president and chief operating officer of
Special Olympics International. Lum
shared stories from his time at the
University as a Jefferson Scholar and talked
about his fifteen years at the Coca-Cola
Company, where he served in a variety of
leadership roles in operations, marketing,
strategic planning, and organizational
development, including vice president,
North America strategic planning and
integration. Lum has also served as
chairman of the board of the National
Hands On Network, coordinating its recent merger with Points of Light Foundation. He
delivered an important message, encouraging Scholars to say “yes” when opportunities for
volunteer involvement arise. He encouraged Scholars to pay attention to their “fellow travelers”
as they journey through life and to express gratitude often (and in writing) to those who help
them along the way.
