Citizenship]. I loved discussing seminar topics with them, hearing their
opinions, experiences, and ideas...but most of all I loved just spending time
with them and getting to know them so well. It was a great opportunity to

Featured Speakers/Programs August 2009
n Todd Etter (Jefferson Scholar 1990)
returned for his “Improvisational Comedy”
session and also led a second session that
was a combination scavenger hunt, brainteaser,
and team-building exercise.
n Shelley Boyce, U.Va. alumna and founder
and C.E.O. of MedRisk, spoke at the
Institute’s opening dinner.
n Chip Ransler, a graduate of the College of
Arts & Sciences and the Darden School of
Business, presented a session on his new
company, Husk Power Systems, an
alternative energy company that provides
electricity to rural areas throughout India in
a financially sustainable, scalable, and
environmentally friendly way.
n University Professors Tom Bateman, Ed
Freeman, Marcia Pentz, and John Portmann
all led sessions. Their subjects included
ethics, public speaking, and the concept of
envy.
n Scholars spent one week volunteering in the
Charlottesville community in partnership
with the Albemarle Housing Improvement
Project.
