Honors Program<br />
Degree Awarded: Associate in Arts, Science or Applied Science<br />
Additionally:<br />
1. First time college students must be graduates of a college<br />
prep high school program with at least one of the<br />
following: 1) high school average of 90% at the end of<br />
junior year; 2) class rank in the top 10% of the class; 3)<br />
combined SAT score of 1200 (math + verbal) or 1800 (3<br />
parts); 4) ACT score of 27.<br />
Home schooled students and GED holders are welcome to<br />
the Honors Program. They must talk with Admissions and<br />
the Honors Program Coordinator to discuss eligibility.<br />
2. High school seniors with accumulated college credits:<br />
a) Between 1 and 11.5 credits must meet the requirements<br />
for first time college students and have attained a<br />
cumulative average of 3.5 for completed college courses.<br />
b) Twelve or more credits must meet transfer student<br />
requirements.<br />
3. Transfer students with 12 or more credits must have a GPA<br />
of 3.5 and must provide a two- to five-page typed essay to<br />
be evaluated as part of the admissions application.<br />
Honors courses taken at other colleges will be accepted<br />
toward the <strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong> Honors Program, where<br />
appropriate, following current transfer course guidelines.<br />
Students may meet an Honors English course requirement<br />
with a course previously taken at another college with a<br />
grade of “A” in an appropriate transfer English course or a<br />
grade of 4 in Advanced Placement English from high school.<br />
If AP English, student must also submit the essay<br />
component of the AP English exam for evaluation; however,<br />
the Honors Program required credits must be made up with<br />
other Honors courses, in consultation with the Program<br />
Coordinator.<br />
4. Current <strong>SUNY</strong> <strong>Orange</strong> students, including 24 Credit Hour<br />
students, must have a GPA of 3.5 and provide an essay to<br />
be included with the admissions application for evaluation.<br />
Note: If students have already achieved an “A” in <strong>SUNY</strong><br />
<strong>Orange</strong>’s Freshman English 1 and/or 2*, the above noted<br />
essay and Honors English 1 and/or 2 requirement will be<br />
satisfied. Still, the three or six Honors credits must be made<br />
up with other Honors courses, in consultation with the<br />
Program Coordinator.<br />
* Dependent upon major<br />
Students who are are not in the Honors Program but<br />
are interested in taking an Honors course should contact<br />
the Honors Program Coordinator.<br />
Transfer Opportunities<br />
Completion of the Honors<br />
program may enhance transfer and<br />
scholarship opportunities to more<br />
selective colleges and universities<br />
and prepare students for the<br />
academic work required for<br />
continued pursuit of undergraduate<br />
and graduate degrees.<br />

Requirements for Honors<br />
Designation<br />
In order for students to show<br />
the Honors Designation on their<br />
transcripts and seal on their<br />
diplomas upon graduation, they<br />
must have been accepted to and<br />
have attained the following in<br />
the Honors Program:<br />
1.Completion of all degree<br />
requirements;<br />
2. Achievement of a 3.5 GPA at<br />
the time of graduation, with<br />
no semester GPA less than<br />
3.0.<br />
