Elementary level foreign language courses can be<br />
used to meet the humanities requirement for the A.A.<br />
and A.S. degrees if a minimum of two semesters of<br />
study of the same language is completed. Only one<br />
semester of an intermediate level foreign language<br />
course is necessary for humanities credit.<br />
FRE 101—Elementary French 1<br />
3 cr.<br />
A beginning study of the language for students who<br />
have not previously studied French, or those who have<br />
no more than one year of high school French.<br />
Although emphasis is placed on the language as it is<br />
heard and spoken, reading and writing skills are also<br />
developed. (GE 9)<br />
Note: Students who are proficient in French may be<br />
placed in a more advanced course.<br />
FRE 102—Elementary French 2<br />
3 cr.<br />
Additional practice in conversation is combined<br />
with the development of reading and writing skills.<br />
Readings pertain to cultural topics. (GE 9)<br />
Prerequisite: FRE 101 or two years of high school<br />
study or placement by the instructor<br />
FRE 201—Intermediate French 1<br />
3 cr.<br />
This course increases the student's ability to use the<br />
language through practice in conversation, reading,<br />
and writing. It includes a systematic review of the<br />
essentials of grammar. Readings pertain to<br />
contemporary cultural topics. (GE 9)<br />
Prerequisite: FRE 102 or instructor placement<br />

GEO 101 fulfills the mathematics or natural science<br />
requirement for the associate degrees. Further, those<br />
courses which fulfill the social science requirement for<br />
the AA. degree are identified by requirement category<br />
at the end of the course description.<br />
GEO 101—Elements of Physical Geography<br />
3 cr. (Fall/Spring)<br />
The study of the origin and distribution of the<br />
major physical features on the earth's surface. Topics<br />
include an introduction to globes and maps, earth-sun<br />
relationships, weather, climate, land forms, soils and<br />
natural vegetation.<br />
GEO 101 fulfills the mathematics and natural science<br />
requirement for associate degrees not requiring a lab<br />
science. It does not fulfill the social science requirement<br />
for any degree.<br />
GEO 102—Human Geography<br />
3 cr. (Fall)<br />
The origin, distribution, differences and ecology of<br />
the world's population along with cultural activities<br />
are studied. Topics include race, world religions,<br />
languages, agricultural and industrial development,<br />
and the rise of urban centers as human responses to<br />
the physical environment. Fulfills category C. (GE 3)<br />
FRE 202—Intermediate French 2<br />
3 cr.<br />
Emphasis is given to cultural or literary readings<br />
and to free oral expression. Grammatical structures,<br />
including the subjunctive, are reviewed. (GE 9)<br />
Prerequisite: FRE 201 or instructor placement<br />
FRE 203—Advanced French 1<br />
3 cr.<br />
Literary works of twentieth century French authors<br />
are studied and oral fluency is further developed<br />
through practice in conversation. Grammar is<br />
reviewed as needed. (GE 9)<br />
Prerequisite: FRE 202 or instructor placement<br />
FRE 204—Advanced French 2<br />
3 cr.<br />
Readings in twentieth century prose and poetry are<br />
discussed, as well as other topics of cultural interest.<br />
Compositions are occasionally required. (GE 9)<br />
Prerequisite: FRE 203 or placement by the instructor<br />
