Physical Education/Exercise Studies/Health<br />
PED 205—Personal Training<br />
2 cr.<br />
This course is designed to provide theoretical<br />
knowledge and practical skill in preparation for the<br />
National Council on Strength and Fitness Personal<br />
Training Certification exam. The course will cover<br />
the most up to date fitness conditioning principles<br />
and assessment methods, provide students essential<br />
knowledge for developing client-trainer relationships,<br />
and effective implementation of fitness program and<br />
individual exercise instruction.<br />
Pre-/Co-requisites: BIO 111 Anatomy and<br />
Physiology 1 and PED201Exercise Physiology.<br />
PED 230—Exercise Studies Practicum<br />
2 cr.<br />
Students will meet weekly as a class to explore<br />
topics of professionalism, market survey, trouble<br />
shooting, motivation, supervision and initiative as<br />
well as developing web site pages, newsletters, and<br />
designing bulletin boards. Students will also<br />
document experiences to meet the requirement of 45<br />
hours in an applied work setting. Develop skills,<br />
abilities, competencies and organizational and<br />
administrative techniques while working under direct<br />
supervision of selected professionals in their chosen<br />
area of interest: exercise physiology, personal<br />
training, exercise leadership, athletic training,<br />
nutrition, recreation, teaching, and coaching.<br />
Prerequisites: PED 202 Basic Exercise Physiology,<br />
PED 201 Human Movement, PED 203 Fitness &<br />
Exercise Prescription (can be taken concurrently).<br />
Cumulative GPA 2.5 or Chair permission.<br />
PED 280—Exercise Studies Capstone<br />
The capstone course in the program of study<br />
provides a student the opportunity to synthesize,<br />
analyze, and apply knowledge acquired over different<br />
courses in the program. Students will choose a<br />
project, plan and implement the project, write a<br />
scholarly paper with research into the topic, discuss<br />
the detailed process of the project and present their<br />
findings and experiences to the Movement science<br />
faculty, peers and other college/public individuals<br />
interested. The course will provide students the<br />
opportunity to assess their interests and talents as<br />
they relate to the professional areas of study in the<br />
field of physical education, nutrition, exercise studies,<br />
personal training, health and fitness professional,<br />
recreation, athletic training, and/ or health education.<br />
All projects MUST be pre-approved by faculty and<br />
completed during the registered semester.<br />
PHYSICAL EDUCATION SKILLS:<br />
1 credit each for a full semester, unless otherwise<br />
noted. The skills courses are designed for those<br />
majoring in Exercise Studies, or the suggested study<br />
area of Physical Education in the Liberal Arts degrees.<br />
However, if a student outside these areas wishes to<br />
enroll in these courses to fulfill the physical education<br />
requirement they can do so only with Department Chair<br />
approval. Skills courses are graded A through F; the<br />
grades are based on skill and knowledge level of the<br />
material presented. Written tests are required. For<br />

graded on a pass/fail basis, see PES—Physical<br />

PES 100—Concepts of Physical Wellness<br />
1 lect., 1 lab., 1 cr.<br />
A theory/discussion course designed to introduce<br />
students to the basic fundamental building blocks of<br />
physical wellness and how this body of knowledge<br />
relates to their own personal wellness. Course focus is<br />
on physical wellness which will include the<br />
components of physical fitness, exercise, nutrition and<br />
weight management, disease prevention, personal<br />
safety, stress management, and current consumer<br />
issues relevant to physical wellness. This course<br />
enables students to begin designing a lifetime personal<br />
wellness program that suits their own physical<br />
wellness goals and objectives. Sudents will participate<br />
in various labs to assess current fitness levels and<br />
practice exercise prescription principles through<br />
various forms of activity. All physical activity is<br />
modified to challenge the student within the<br />
individual’s ability.<br />
Note: 1 credit in Concepts of Physical Wellness is a<br />
graduation requirement for all A.A., A.S. and A.A.S.<br />
degrees offered at <strong>Orange</strong> County Community<br />
College with the exception of an A.S. in Exercise<br />
Studies.<br />
