Multilateral Investment Fund
(MIF) of the Inter-American
Development Bank launched
the program in partnership
with Grupo ACP, Universidad
Thunderbird Professors
Thunderbird and partners launch Pakistan outreach
Thunderbird will host
businesswomen from Pakistan
for entrepreneurship
training May 2-15, 2011,
as part of a new partnership
between the U.S. State
Department and the Goldman
Sachs 10,000 Women
program.
The program will be
modeled on Thunderbird’s
successful Project Artemis,
which the school launched
in 2005 to empower Afghan
businesswomen. Overall,
Thunderbird has trained
more than 60 women entrepreneurs
in four groups
from Afghanistan.
U.S. Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton announced
the Pakistan partnership
Oct. 22, 2010, in Washington,
D.C., at a meeting with
Pakistani Foreign Minister
Mahmood Qureshi.
“The advancement of
women is an integral part
of all the projects we pursue
together because we know
that when we elevate the
role of women, it benefits
their families and, particularly,
their children,”
Clinton said at the meeting.
“Those benefits expand to
the communities as well.”
Pakistani women who
come to Thunderbird
will learn business and
leadership skills, financial
management and strategic
planning. Following the
two-week program, each
graduate will receive guidance
from a mentor for at
least two years.
10,000 Women is a
global initiative that will
provide 10,000 underserved
women, predominantly in
developing and emerging
markets, with business and
management education.
Thunderbird has operated a
10,000 Women program in
Afghanistan since 2008.
In 2010 Thunderbird
launched a second 10,000
Women program in Peru.
That outreach is part of
Strengthening Women
Entrepreneurship in Peru,
a multi-tiered women’s
empowerment program
funded by Goldman Sachs,
the Australian Agency for
International Development,
Mibanco and the Multilateral
Investment Fund of
Inter-American Development
Bank.
