Lisa Dahl ’93 isn’t packing
her suitcases for the usual
business trips or vacations.
When she tours a city, she
does it on foot.
Dahl has pounded the
pavement — or dirt —
in marathons on three
continents and in 49 U.S.
states. She hopes someday
to be part of an elite few
hundred runners who have
participated in marathons
on every continent. Earlier
this year, the senior director
of business development
for Lexmark International
reached 50 states when
she ran in the Maui Ocean
Front Marathon in Hawaii.
“You can’t always see a
city when you’re there on
business. But when you go
running, it’s a really neat
way to be able to see the
city, be with locals and experience
a place,” Dahl said.
On a recent trip, Dahl
traveled to Cambodia for
a marathon. After the race,
she met an impoverished
child who was barefoot and
trying to sell postcards to
tourists.
Dahl was so consumed
with the need to help the
child that she ended up
taking the shoes off her feet
and giving them to the little
Bulgarian banking arm of Dutch
fi nancial and insurance group ING.

“Anyone who can afford
to go out there and run, can
afford to give a child their
shoes,” she said.
Dahl said that her experiences
running in so many
marathons have allowed
her to meet diverse people
and strong women around
the world. She likens it to
her time as a student at
Thunderbird.
“One of my fondest
memories of Thunderbird
was just being with this
infusion of people from
different backgrounds and
experiences,” Dahl said.
“My Thunderbird experience
was a great jumpingoff
point for being very
open to visiting other parts
of the world.”
