These rare communities often contain equally rare species such as Large-flowered rosemary, nodding pinweed, Florida scrub jays, Florida mice, Florida scrub lizards, Sherman’s Fox Squirrel, snowy orchid, 57
southeastern kestrel, Florida sandhill crane, and pygmy rattlesnake. The tract is large enough to support viable populations of all but the most ranging Florida wildlife species. Importance – This site forms an important part of the Florida ecological greenways network. This large contiguous block of natural and semi natural habitat is unique within the county and could provide both sufficient habitat for many native plants and animals as well as serving as a corridor to large conservation lands just outside the county (Allapattah Flats and Fort Drum Marsh) Connectivity – Within 500 feet of existing conservation lands. Proximity to Urban Areas – Greater than a half mile from an urban center. Proximity to primary and secondary roads – Within 500 feet of a major roadway. Table 2. The site summary provided here is limited in nature due to the limitations of such a survey method. There are 32 landowners. The largest landowners are Adams Ranch (10377 acres), Vavrus (5783 acres), Ru-Mar Inc. (3868 acres), Rodriguez (3700 acres), and Wescott Groves (1050 acres). Recommendation/Management Requirements – This site is primarily used for cattle grazing and is expected to have a reduced and altered ground cover flora due to selective grazing and pasture management practices. Restoration of the ground cover could prove difficult due to the large areas impacted, the long duration of impact, and the limited amount of surrounding native vegetation to serve as source material. 58
