the development of a comprehensive database in which aggregate characterization process is executed,
that will lead toward a data base development for engineering properties, mineralogical properties and
performance knowledge for asphalt mix. This information will act as an inventory that carries quarry
material properties from its origin to processed crush aggregates and asphalt concrete performance based
on identified affecting factors. In second stage, the sequence of this information is input in the tools of
pavement asset management system which establish connection in three parts. The first part acquires the
data from source identification stage which provide material deposits identification with respect to
location, its geological strata and types of raw rock available in the area. The second part encompasses the
evaluation stage which accumulates the data regarding engineering properties and petrographic studies
thereby giving processed aggregate serviceability. This comprehensive information is a tool to assess the
parameter of material in terms of quality, quantity, cost and availability. The standard values for test and
cost of the material can also be compared through this data which is effective in the selection of material
required for particular construction and site. The third part generates the performance based testing and
life cycle of the pavement structure in terms of distresses. Based on important performance parameters,
this generates the knowledge of pavement stability and its deterioration when that characterized aggregate
is used in asphalt mix(in case of flexible pavement). All the inventory data is entered in their respective
executing devices and collected in analytical tool [Figure 1]. This analytical tool box merges and used the
data for the assessment of material performance; system cost and risk investigation. In third stage the
decisions supported by analysis tools are taken up by evaluating the need and suitability of material. The
decisions then promote to the work program where options for upgrading the structure are executed.
These activities correspond to the inventory of aggregate when it comes to reconstruction and upgradation
program of the pavement according to cost and quality of required material thus completes the
cycle of pavement asset management program. In case of no constrcution decision, the framework leads
to the end. Figure 3 demonstrates the flow of pavement asset management program that indicate
aggregate characterization as the core step to enhance the capacity of the system.
5. GIS Imagery for Quarries and Crushers of Hub
The area of hub river was surveyed and location of quarries and crushers was identified by means of hand
held GPS. The data gathered during survey and results of aggregate characteristics were compiled. The
location of quarries and crusher are then plotted on a GIS map so as to get the quick layout of material
sources available. Figure 4 shows the GIS-map of Hub river.
6. Conclusion
It is concluded that has the capacity to integrate spatial and functional characteristics of aggregates to
implement a comprehensive asset management system. The study revealed the following covers:
Hub river is the major quarry nourishing the construction sites. The massive amount of Hub
aggregates are collected, processed and transported for construction of pavements and buildings as it
is suitable for both.
The characterization process will be an input database for the pavement asset management program
and it is strongest tool for executing the pavement management system
GIS-map for quarries and crusher will produce an inventory for the management system as it
produces all the required data needed for analysis tool of pavement asset management program.
The comprehensive aggregate characterization database will help in assessing the Life cycle cost of
highway asset there by improving the overall pavement asset management system through better
understanding of material performance.
The integration of aggregate characterization and asset management tools will enhance the system
execution process and leads toward strong decisions and better solutions for upgrading the asset and
make it reliable and serviceable.
