Kiamari Town is surrounded by some prominent physical features of the city namely RCD Highway,
Lyari River, Circular Railway Line, M.T.Khan Road, Arabian Sea and Balochistan province. The study
area shares border with Gadap, Baldia, S.I.T.E, Lyari and Sadder Towns of Karachi city. This town is
administratively divided into jurisdiction of two authorities namely, City District Government Karachi
(CDGK) and Karachi Port Trust (KPT), although some negligible amount of land is under the control of
Central Board of Revenue (CBR).
Future development plans by both the administrative authorities, i.e., CDGK and KPT like Hawksbay
Scheme 42, Educational City, Sports and Recreational Centers, commercial developments like Depot
Terminals, Warehouses, Asphalt Plant and wholesale market, KPT Housing Scheme, Pakistan Deep
Water Container Port, Karachi International Container Terminal etc. will surely increase trip generation in
the study area. Simultaneously, the proposed road infrastructure in Kiamari Town does not seem to be
satisfying the traffic demands of the town which will not only adversely affect the business and economy
but also degrade the environment of this area.
Although Gadap and Bin Qasim Towns have greater percentage increase in population as compared to
Kiamari Town, however, the following reasons gives significance to Kiamari Town over other towns of
Karachi city: i) As an international seaport Kiamari Town act as a hub for international trade and
commerce. ii) The transportation infrastructure provided in KSDP-2020 for Kiamari Town seems to be
lacking in fulfilling the future travel needs of this area. iii) The construction of KICT (Karachi
International Container Terminal) and world‘s deepest port (Pakistan Deep Water Container Port) in
Kiamari Town cause the future revenue of study area to grow exponentially.
3. Methodology
3.1 Data collection and Development of OD Matrix
In transportation planning, an OD Matrix is one of the most essential data not only to evaluate an existing
situation, but also to build models for forecasting future transportation demand. To obtain the OD Matrix
for Karachi city, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) conducted a person trip study in 2005
which includes the data collection through Household Interview Survey (HIS) and development of OD
Matrix. The basic objective for conducting this study was to investigate the travel behavior patterns of
residents of Karachi by various purposes, modes, occupations, age groups, etc. All 26,300 households that
were selected from all 18 towns of Karachi by random sampling in proportion to the 1998 census were
surveyed. The sample size for HIS was 1.5 percent of the total population of Karachi city. In this research,
we have initially evaluated the developed OD matrix and the person trip data collected by the JICA.
Household Interview Survey was conducted by adopting the following parameters:
The interview aimed to obtain the behavior of trips regularly made throughout a week.
Consequently, everyday trips such as school and office-workers-commuting-trips were easily
obtained but irregular trips such as shopping and recreational trips were not acquired.
Interviews by proxy person were allowed in the interview. Generally, direct interviews to
respondents are required in order to collect accurate information. For example, non-home base
trip information such as business trip from office cannot be collected by proxy person.
If the interviewer could not obtained the information in the first visit due to non-availability of the
concerned person, the surveyor should make revisit to complete interviews. However, this was
not obligatory in the Person Trip Study.
Screen line adjustment aimed to adjust the number of trips aggregated from the person trip database to the
traffic volume actually counted. This adjustment factor was employed to adjust all trips, including trips in
the study area. Finally, the comprehensive OD matrix was developed (Table 2).
