environment was better comparatively, as the average data packets processing time was two seconds
where as in a distributed environment, it was five seconds. This delay was anticipated as web services
invocated over the network, to finally execute the task of processing vehicle data packets from multiple
DDCS components within the DDCS shell. This caused the extra three seconds performance delay
throughout.
Usefulness of such a system is unquestionable as it provides flexibility of accessing vehicle data records
from anywhere in the world, using any portable or a stationary device installed with DDCS. Within this
context, a detailed performance study is under progress which involves comparison of GPRS traffic
network performance when using DDCS, with various GPRS service providers and various equipments.
In addition, further research on implementing the DDCS functionality on portable devices such as PDA is
under progress using .NET Compact framework (CF) and web services. The results of these studies are
going to be published in the future.
6. Acknowledgement
Authors would like to thank the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) (Partnership No.1146) for partly
funding this work. In addition, the unquestionable support and coordination provided by the staffs and
engineers of TDC Systems Limited will always be appreciated. Special Thank also goes to Mr. Vishal
Barot, who worked as KTP project Associate and developed the GPRS software development and
involved program test.
