Road network and built-up area of METU campus The verification of the map-matching processes is done against the controlled data collected using handheld GPS. Two predefined routes, ―Route #1‖ and ―Route #2‖, are used to collect controlled data with one-second epochs. Both set of data are first mapped to the network with PTC method, and mismatched data are further analyzed with RB matching algorithm. Route #1 consists of 1168 track data. mismatched after PTC step, all of which are corrected through correction steps utilizing topological relations of matched links. In manual control, it is observed that the routes generated from track-data completely match the actual route followed to collect track data for Route #1. Route #2 consists of 1280 track data, all of which are matched through PTC. In RB matching step, a total of 68 track data are detected as mismatched after PTC step, 65 of which are corrected in RB matching step. A close-up shot from network where both routes are passing shows the results of PTC and RB matching process, and how a mismatched track data is assigned to the correct link is shown in Figure 3. Figure 3. Route Based Mapping In Route #2, there track data, two of which are consequent, cannot be corrected. Such mismatch cases left uncorrected even after a RB matching process are studied in the controlled data separately. These are either unexpected or illegal moves in the network, such a U-turn, or movements to or within parking lots which are not defined in the link-node network in a topologically correct way. For such cases, the proposed method has additional subroutines, which are not discussed here for the sake of simplicity, that automatically uses the matched sub-route information from the GPS track data if possible and discard the data unmatched data. 4.2 Estimation of Traffic Network Characteristics After processing GPS data to create a time-dependent route database, travel-time calculation is performed using the matched GPS data closest to the entry and exit points of each link from multiple vehicle track data. In this step, these results within a total time windows (T) are regrouped and evaluated for various durations of analysis-windows (τ). Traffic conditions through an analysis window (τ) are assumed homogenous. Time-dependent cost tables are calculated for a range of durations of analysis-windows. During the evaluations, three sets of data are included in calculations; fleet-tracking data with 10-second epochs, fleet-tracking data with 30-second epochs and tracking data collected with handheld GPS on transit vehicles with 1-second epochs. 87 percent of the track data fall between 07:00 AM and 07:00 PM.
