It is indeed a matter of great pride and pleasure for me to welcome you all in this two<br />

days National Workshop on Project Snow <strong>leopard</strong> being organized by the Government of Jammu<br />

& Kashmir, Department of Wildlife Protection at Leh with the support of Government of India,<br />

Ministry of Environment & Forests and in technical collaboration with the <strong>Nature</strong> <strong>Conservation</strong><br />

<strong>Foundation</strong> and the International Snow Leopard Trust.<br />

I feel privileged to extend a very warm welcome to Thiru A. Raja, Hon’ble Union Minister<br />

of Environment and Forests, Government of India who has very kindly accepted our invitation<br />

to come all the way to Leh, amidst his otherwise extremely busy schedule for inauguration of this<br />

workshop. I also welcome his accompanying team of senior officers of the Ministry of Environment<br />

& Forests, Shri. J.C. Kala, Director General Forests & Special Secretary, Dr. Devendra Pandey,<br />

Director, Forest Survey of India and Dr Anmol Kumar, Deputy Inspector General Forests<br />

(Wildlife).<br />

Jenab Tariq Hameed Karra, Hon’ble Minister for Housing, Urban Development &<br />

Forests, Jammu & Kashmir State has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance to us in<br />

management of our forest & wildlife resources. He has taken a keen interest in planning for this<br />

very important workshop. I extend a warm welcome to him. We are fortunate to have amongst<br />

ourselves some leading elected representatives of the state - Shri Rigzin Zora, Hon’ble Minister for<br />

Power Development, Industries and Commerce, Jammu & Kashmir, Mr. Tsering Dorje, Chairman,<br />

Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Shri Thupten Chhewang, Hon’ble Member of<br />

Parliament, Ladakh and Shri P. Namgyal, Hon’ble MLC, Leh who have very kindly agreed to share<br />

their views on conservation of <strong>snow</strong> <strong>leopard</strong> and its habitat in this workshop being held at Leh today<br />

and tomorrow.
