And perhaps most importantly, the forest and wildlife departments articulated their expectations from the Project Snow Leopard, and the strategy elements they would like to see in it. Ladies and Gentlemen, we now believe that it is no longer a question of whether or not India will have a Project snow leopard, but how soon we will have one. And the kind of enthusiasm we have seen in all the five states, and the kind of support that has been shown by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, we are hopeful that our country will have a Project Snow Leopard very soon. Thanks for your kind attention.
Chapter 4: Workshop presentations and discussions Summary of Presentations of Technical Sessions Technical Session I The first technical session began with a presentation by Shri A. K. Srivastava, CWLW of Jammu & Kashmir state. He gave an overview of snow leopard conservation in the state and also highlighted the global population and conservation status of snow leopard vis-à-vis its status and population trends in India. Threats facing the snow leopard including those linked to habitat and prey, direct killing, policy and awareness and others were summarised. He gave a detailed account of snow leopard occurrence in the protected areas of Jammu & Kashmir. He concluded by reviewing the recommendations of the 5 th International Snow Leopard Symposium and the objectives for PSL as well as for the workshop. He urged the MoEF to constitute a committee to take this process forward. The Regional Wildlife Warden of Ladakh, Mr. Jigmet Takpa gave an overview of the biodiversity of Ladakh highlighting salient features of mammal, bird and plant diversity and drawing attention to the unique aspects of flora and fauna of this high altitude region. This presentation was followed by a few remarks by Shri Padam Singh Chauhan, Additional Secretary Forests, Himachal Pradesh, who assured the gathering of his state’s commitment to PSL. He expressed confidence that PSL would be successfully implemented in Himachal Pradesh. The CWLW and Additional PCCF of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri K. D. Singh drew attention to the rich biodiversity of the state mainly due to its geographic location and high forest cover. He highlighted the global biodiversity hotspot status of the region and the recent discoveries of mammalian species that were either new to science or reported for the first time in India. While appreciating the role of the scientists of the Nature Conservation Foundation in these discoveries and scientific research work, he also pointed out the need for more efforts in the state. He expressed satisfaction regarding the state-level workshop on PSL in Arunachal Pradesh, and stressed that the proposed participatory nature of PSL makes it particularly relevant for a state like Arunachal Pradesh where most of the land is under community ownership. He ended with consideration of the needs of people while implementing PSL as being of high importance. Mr. Samir Sinha, Conservator of Forests and Director, Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, Uttaranchal, stressed the need for a landscape level approach to snow leopard conservation due to its occurrence both within as well as outside the protected areas.
