At the end of 2007, Russian Steel employed 47,737 people
(full-time equivalent), an increase of 1.5% on 2006. Despite various
acquisitions, employee numbers remained stable due to a deliberate
policy of downsizing. At Cherepovets Steel Mill, for example,
employee numbers were cut by 2,898 people or 8.1%, making a
workforce of 32,747 average people during the reporting period.
Production results
In 2007, Russian Steel produced 8.759 million tonnes of hot metal
(up 6.8% on 2006), 11.899 million tonnes of crude steel (up 5.3%
on 2006) and 10.811 million tonnes of steel products (up 8%).
The growth in hot metal smelting was principally due to
the reopening of blast furnace No. 5 following planned repairs.
Crude steel and rolled production increased due to greater
efficiency and productivity of individual units. In particular, we
have been able to reduce repair and other outages, improve
smelting technology in EAF and improve heating technology
in rolling shops.
Sales and marketing
The volume of Russian Steel’s shipments increased by 7.9% in
2007, while sales grew by 26.1%. The main reason for the big
difference between these growth rates was the price increases
in almost all steel-consuming segments.
Russian Steel’s sales by product
In 2007, sales of hot-rolled flat products accounted for 46.1% of
overall sales volume (40.7% of revenue), long products for 18.8%
of volume (15.5% of revenue), cold-rolled products for 13.0% of
volume (11.9% of revenue), semi-finished products for 8.1% of
volume (4.8% of revenue) and galvanised and other metallic
coated sheet for 6.9% of volume (8.7% of revenue).
Compared with 2006, hot-rolled flat products sales increased
by 7.8% in volume (25.6% in revenue), long products by 6.7% in
volume (40.4% in revenue), semi-finished products by 52.7% in
volume (95.2% in revenue), galvanised and other metallic coated
sheet by 8.2% in volume (19.5% in revenue), and colour coated
sheet by 59.4% in volume (89.3% in revenue).
The major increases in sales were in long products, galvanised
and other metallic coated sheet and colour coated sheet. This was
a result of higher demand for these products from the construction
industry. A growth in export demand for semi-finished products
also contributed to this gain. At the same time, the revenue growth
significantly exceeded shipment growth by volume due to the
global price increases.
Sales of cold-rolled products decreased in volume by 9.7%,
while revenue was up 2.9%. This was largely the result of reduced
demand from the Russian automotive industry.
