If the deformations produced in the mineral skeleton <strong>of</strong> a loaded coarse grained granular<br />

material are assumed to be concentrated mainly on the particle contacts and their<br />

immediate neighbourhoods, the explanation for the experimentally observed effects <strong>of</strong><br />

the maximum grain size appears to be relatively straightforward: The coarser the<br />

material is, the smaller is the number <strong>of</strong> particle contacts needed to transmit the load<br />

exerted on the mineral skeleton (Kolisoja 1997).<br />

The compression <strong>of</strong> a particulate system which is composed <strong>of</strong> spherical particles<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> linear elastic material and being in simple cubic packing arrangement<br />

appears to be independent <strong>of</strong> the grain size if the load is applied in the direction <strong>of</strong> the<br />

axis <strong>of</strong> symmetry <strong>of</strong> the system and if the load is evenly distributed over the particle<br />

queues (Kolisoja 1997). However, as the packing arrangement <strong>of</strong> the particulate system
