- Longitudinal forces- Centrifugal forces- Earth pressures - Temperature effects - Secondary stresses- Erection<br />

stresses - Seismic forces.<br />

Foundation and substructure: Scour depth - Types <strong>of</strong> Foundation - Shallow foundations - Pile foundation.<br />

Pneumatic caissons, Design <strong>of</strong> piers and abutments - bed blocks.<br />

Module II<br />

Bearings: Concrete, steel and Neoprene bearing, Design <strong>of</strong> elastomeric pad bearings, Load distribution on<br />

Bridge Decks – Grid analysis- Courbon’s method - Orthotropic plate theory.<br />

Reinforced Concrete Bridges: Review <strong>of</strong> the design <strong>of</strong> slab, T- beam - Principle <strong>of</strong> design <strong>of</strong> balanced<br />

cantilever and continuous girder bridges.<br />

Module III<br />

Pre-stressed Concrete Bridges: Principle <strong>of</strong> design <strong>of</strong> single span bridges- composite construction.<br />

Steel Bridges: Design <strong>of</strong> plate girders, Principles <strong>of</strong> design <strong>of</strong> trussed bridges and cable stayed bridges.<br />

Construction: Present construction- handling and erection, connection formwork for in situ construction.<br />

Construction joints.<br />

Question paper:Duration: 3 Hrs.<br />

The question paper consists <strong>of</strong> Part A and Part B.<br />

Part A is for 40 marks. There will be 8 compulsory short answer questions <strong>of</strong> 5 marks each covering the entire<br />

syllabus.<br />

Part B is for 60 marks. There will be two questions from each module. The candidate has to answer one<br />

question from each module.<br />

Use <strong>of</strong> IRC 6-2000,IRC 21-2000, IS 800-2007, IRC 18-1985 , IRC 24-2001, IRC-83-1987 Structural steel<br />

Tables and design Charts are permitted in the Examination hall.<br />
