Module-I<br />
Urban hydrology –urban flooding-causes <strong>of</strong> flooding-remedial measures-Design <strong>of</strong> urban storm water collection<br />
system-Gutters, inlets and sewers-rational formula-limitations-Storm water pollution and control (basic<br />
concepts)-Best management practices for urban drainage-constructed treatment wetlands(No design).<br />
Module –II<br />
Role <strong>of</strong> fluid mechanics in environmental planning-turbulent flow-momentum equations-dispersion-diffusionadvection-Fick’s<br />
law-Classical solutions <strong>of</strong> pollutant transport-determination <strong>of</strong> down stream concentrationestimation<br />
<strong>of</strong> width <strong>of</strong> plume and length required for complete mixing-simple problems-Theory <strong>of</strong> jets and<br />
plumes-Richardson number-Types <strong>of</strong> jets-density stratification in lakes and reservoirs-Densimetric Froude<br />
number.<br />
Module-III<br />
Contaminant propagation through soil-different mechanisms-hydraulic aspects <strong>of</strong> pollutant transport (basic ideas<br />
only)-introductory knowledge about groundwater contamination-sources and remedies. Brief discussion on<br />
environmental impacts <strong>of</strong> different types <strong>of</strong> water resources projects such as irrigation, flood control, dams.<br />
Environmental impact assessment-Onsite and <strong>of</strong>fsite impacts-Matrix, networks and other techniques-index<br />
methods for environmental impacts on groundwater –simple quantitative approaches for watershed impacts-soil<br />
loss equation.<br />

Question Paper:<br />
Duration:3 hours<br />
The question paper consists <strong>of</strong> Part A and Part B.<br />
Part A carries 40 marks. There will be 8 compulsory short answer questions covering entire syllabus.<br />
Part B is for 60 marks. There will be 2 questions from each module. The candidate has to answer one question<br />
<strong>of</strong> 20 marks from each module.<br />
