efrigeration equipment in buildings can emit hydr<strong>of</strong>luorocarbons (HFCs) and other greenhouse gases when these<br />

systems leak refrigerants or fire suppressants.<br />

In <strong>2006</strong>, the operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>County</strong> facilities produced over 55,000 metric tons <strong>of</strong> CO 2 e from the above sources. Table<br />

3.3 shows estimated costs associated with the activities that generated these emissions, and Figure 3.3 depicts <strong>2006</strong><br />

emissions by major department. Total facility emissions by source are illustrated in Figure 3.4, they are,<br />

approximately 73 percent came from the consumption <strong>of</strong> electricity, 27 percent from natural gas consumption, and<br />

less than 1 percent came from leaked refrigerants (2 metric tons <strong>of</strong> CO 2 e). The <strong>County</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> spent $7.8<br />

million in <strong>2006</strong> on the fuels and electricity that were the cause <strong>of</strong> these emissions.<br />
