efrigeration equipment in buildings can emit hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and other greenhouse gases when these
systems leak refrigerants or fire suppressants.
In 2006, the operation of County facilities produced over 55,000 metric tons of CO 2 e from the above sources. Table
3.3 shows estimated costs associated with the activities that generated these emissions, and Figure 3.3 depicts 2006
emissions by major department. Total facility emissions by source are illustrated in Figure 3.4, they are,
approximately 73 percent came from the consumption of electricity, 27 percent from natural gas consumption, and
less than 1 percent came from leaked refrigerants (2 metric tons of CO 2 e). The County of San Diego spent $7.8
million in 2006 on the fuels and electricity that were the cause of these emissions.
