Community Inventory Results 4.1 Community Inventory Summary In 2005, activities and operations taking place within the jurisdictional boundaries of unincorporated San Diego County resulted in approximately 4,197,665 metric tons of CO 2 e. This number includes all Scope 1 emissions from the on-site combustion of fuels in the residential and commercial / industrial sectors, from the combustion of gasoline and diesel in vehicles traveling on local roads and state highways, and any methane released from any landfills within unincorporated San Diego County. 4.1.1 Summary by Scope As shown in Table 4.1, Scope 1 sources produced the largest amount of community greenhouse gas emissions in 2005, totaling 3,381,615 metric tons of CO 2 e. As seen in Figure 4.1, the largest share (86 percent) of Scope 1 emissions resulted from mobile combustion of fuels. The second largest source of Scope 1 emissions was stationary combustion of natural gas, constituting 13 percent of Scope 1 emissions. Scope 2 emissions constituted the second largest amount (668,439 metric tons of CO 2 e), and Scope 3 emissions totaled 147,611 metric tons of CO 2 e. 16 Figure 4.1 Community Scope 1 Emissions Transportatio n Fuels 86% Landfill Wastein-Place 0.4% Natural Gas 13% 4.1.2 Summary by Sector By better understanding the relative scale of emissions from each primary sector, San Diego County can more effectively focus emissions reductions strategies to achieve the greatest emission reductions. For this reason, an analysis of emissions by sector is included in this report. The five sectors included in this inventory are residential, commercial / industrial, transportation, solid waste, and wastewater. As shown in Figure 4.2, the transportation sector was the largest emitter (69 percent) in 2005. Emissions from the commercial / industrial sector produced the second highest quantity, resulting in 15 percent of total emissions.
