Vigil for Peace More than 50 people, including families effected and their supporters, attended a peace vigil held on April 18th in the Placita de Hijos Ausentes (Missing Children’s Plaza) in Isabel II. Ten children of the Viequense Oasis Education Center played Bomba and Plena at the event. The vigil honored the lives of Vieques residents who have died since 2006 as a result of violence or car accidents. It is hoped that remembering them and supporting their grieving families, will help prevent more needless tragedy in Vieques and for the families to know that they can count on their community to “heal”. Eighteen-year old student Luis Hernandez, expressing the solidarity from his school Nuestra Escuela, brought a very touching message when he said, “I have faced many difficult times in my life, but I do not give up hope. Don’t lose faith in the youth of Vieques. We want to have a good future. If we all work together, we can do anything.” ......................................................... Vigilia por la Paz Más de 50 personas, incluyendo a las familias afectadas y sus acompañantes, asistieron a la vigilia de paz celebrada el 18 de abril en la Placita de Hijos Ausentes en Isabel II. Diez estudiantes del Centro Educativo Viequense Oasis bailaron Bomba y Plena en el evento. La vigilia honró la vida de los residentes de Vieques que han fallecido desde 2006, como resultado de la violencia o accidentes de autos. Se espera que al recordarlos y apoyar a sus familiares, ayudemos a prevenir las tragedias en Vieques y para que las familias sepan que pueden contar con su comunidad para sanar sus heridas. Luis Hernández, estudiante de 18 años de edad, en solidaridad con Nuestra Escuela trajo un mensaje bien emotivo cuando dijo: “he pasado por muchos momentos difíciles en mi vida, pero no pierdo la esperanza. No pierdan la fe en la juventud de Vieques. Queremos tener un buen futuro. Si todos trabajamos juntos, podemos hacer la diferencia.” by: Gladys Aleman María Chuzema trae nueva técnica de narración de cuentos japoneses a los niños de Vieques >> Faro de Punta Mulas, Vieques – durante los días 18 y 19 de mayo, la ganadora del Premio Emmy, Tere Marichal, mejor conocida como María Chuzema, deleitó a las familias de Vieques con tres días de fantasía. Los niños de la isla, junto a sus padres y maestros, fueron invitados a disfrutar de un fin de semana de talleres de narración de cuentos, técnicas para hacer marionetas y creatividad. Sumergida en su personaje, vestida con brillantes colores que iluminaron los ojos de los niños, María Chuzema entró con su maleta llena de historias y marionetas. Ella cautivó a la audiencia con sorprendentes aventuras inspiradas en eventos alrededor del mundo. Dentro de las muchas técnicas de narración de cuentos, ella utilizó Kamishibai, originada en los templos budistas en el Siglo 12, donde los monjes utilizaban rollos con imágenes para contar historias que contenían lecciones de moral. El público se unió con sus canciones y aplaudió al ritmo de sus cuentos, disfrutando de cada momento. Los padres se sentaron junto a sus hijos y escucharon con atención, riéndose con los diferentes personajes que ella sacaba de su maleta. Los tres días de talleres fueron auspiciados por Black Beard Sports, W Retreat & Spa y Camaramundi, los cuales generosamente donaron todos los materiales para llevar a cabo el taller de fabricación de marionetas. Maria Chuzema brings unique Japanese storytelling technique to Vieques kids >> Faro Punta Mulas, Vieques— On the 18th and 19th of May, Emmy award winner, Tere Marichal better known as Maria Chuzema , delighted Vieques families with three days of fantasy. The children of the island along with their parents and teachers, were invited to enjoy a weekend of workshops on storytelling , puppet making techniques and creativity . Immersed in her usual character, dressed in brilliant colors that enthused the eyes of the children, Maria Chuzema entered with her suitcase full of stories and puppets. She charmed her audience with amazing adventures inspired by events from around the world. Among the many types of storytelling techniques she used Kamishibai, originated in Buddhist temples in the 12th century, where monks used picture scrolls to convey stories with moral lessons. The audience joined in with her songs and clapped to the beat of her tales, enjoying every moment of it. Parents sat side by side with their children and listened carefully, laughing at the different characters she whipped out of her suitcase. The three day workshop was sponsored by Black Beard Sports, W Retreat and Spa and Camaramundi which very graciously donated all the materials for the puppet making workshop. Tere Marichal Lugo. Ms Marichal is a writer, illustrator, storyteller and puppeteer. Her work is referenced in the field of Pre-School and Elementary Education in Latin America and she has hosted a children’s’ television show for over 20 years “La casa de María Chuzema”. 38
