CHRYSOBALANACEAE (Parinari)<br />

Tree to 40 m tall, trunk fluted or buttressed at base. Branches densely lanate pubescent when<br />

young, glabrescent, with conspicuous small lenticels. Leaves with stipules lanceolate, acute,<br />

to 25 mm long, caducous, membranous, densely appressed tomentellous on exterior, glabrous<br />

within; petiole thick, 4–7 mm long, tomentellous when young, with 2 small round glands<br />

above on midpoint; lamina coriaceous, elliptic, 9–17 × 5–8 cm, glabrous above, with dense<br />

conspicuous stomatal crypts beneath, bluntly acuminate at apex with tip 3–6 mm long,<br />

rounded at base; midrib plane or impressed above, prominent and pilose, glabrescent beneath;<br />

primary veins 20–28 pairs, slightly impressed on upper portion, prominulous on proximal<br />

portion of upper surface, straight, erect, parallel; secondary veins ±parallel. Flowers not<br />

seen. Infructescence axillary, 3–5 cm long. Fruit irregularly ellipsoid, 6.5 × 4 cm; epicarp<br />

densely lenticellate; mesocarp fleshy; endocarp hard, bony, irregularly ribbed, lanate within.<br />

Tree. Branches villous when young. Leaves with stipules to 2 mm long, caducous; petioles<br />

5–7 mm long, pubescent, terete, with 2 medial glands; lamina oblong, 7.5–16 × 2.5–6.5 cm,<br />

with acumen 2–11 mm long, rounded to subcuneate at base, glabrous above, tomentose and<br />

with stomatal cavities beneath; midrib prominulous above, pubescent towards base; primary<br />

veins 23–26 pairs, prominulous above, prominent beneath. Inflorescences short terminal<br />

densely flowered panicles 6 cm long; rachis and branches densely brown-tomentellous.<br />

Receptacle subcampanulate-turbinate, densely pubescent on exterior; pedicels 1–4 mm long.<br />

Petals 5, white, equalling calyx lobes. Stamens 7 fertile, unilateral, with 7 short filamentous<br />

staminodes opposite to them. Ovary and base of style pilose. Fruit unknown.<br />

Brazil (Minas Gerais and near Rio de Janeiro); known only from the original collections.<br />

densely brown tomentose, membranous, early caducous; petioles 14–20 mm long,<br />

glabrescent, with inconspicuous glands near to lamina base, puberulous, glabrescent; lamina<br />

thickly coriaceous, elliptic, 8–17 × 4–9 cm, glabrous and shiny with metallic sheen above<br />

when dry, with dense stomatal crypts filled with hairs, rounded to shortly blunt acuminate at<br />

apex with tip 0–3 mm long, rounded or subcuneate at base; midrib plane above, prominent<br />

beneath; primary veins 10–15 pairs, prominulous to plane above, prominent beneath, erect,<br />

curved only at margin. Inflorescence of axillary little-branched panicles, 4–10 cm long;<br />

rachis and branches densely brown tomentellous; bracts and bracteoles ovate, early<br />

caducous. Receptacle campanulate, slightly gibbous, 2–3 mm long, ferrugineous pubescent<br />

on exterior; pedicels 0.5 mm long; calyx lobes lanceolate, acute, 1 mm long, tomentellous.<br />
