Foreword<br />

This Rockwell Automation publication is formatted to harmonize with<br />

NEMA <strong>Stand</strong>ards Publication No. ICS 1.1-1987, also titled Safety<br />

Guidelines for the Application, Installation and Maintenance of<br />

Solid-State Control. The text of the NEMA <strong>Stand</strong>ard has been<br />

reprinted verbatim, with NEMA’s permission, in the left column,<br />

captioned “NEMA <strong>Stand</strong>ard Text”. The right column, captioned<br />

“Explanatory Information”, contains Rockwell Automation<br />

comments and explanation. The comments provide supplementary<br />

information to the NEMA <strong>Stand</strong>ard to help the reader better<br />

understand the characteristics of industrial equipment employing<br />

solid-state technology. Rockwell Automation is solely responsible for<br />

the explanatory comments, which are not part of the NEMA<br />

<strong>Stand</strong>ard.<br />

NEMA <strong>Stand</strong>ards Publication No. ICS 1.1-1984 (R1988, R1993, R1998,<br />

R2003) is available from the National Electrical Manufacturers<br />

Comments<br />

Scope<br />

This <strong>Stand</strong>ards Publication is intended to provide general guidelines for<br />

the application, installation, and maintenance of solid-state control in the<br />

form of individual devices or packaged assemblies incorporating solidstate<br />

components. The emphasis of the guidelines is personnel safety.<br />

Applicable NEMA standards and product related instructions should be<br />

carefully followed.<br />

Comments: Scope<br />

The scope of this Allen-Bradley Publication (SGI-1.1) is identical to the<br />

scope of NEMA <strong>Stand</strong>ards Publication No. ICS 1.1, quoted above.<br />
