EXTERIOR WINDOWS<br />

PERFORMANCE<br />

A. Basic Function<br />

1. Fill, cover, close, or otherwise protect all glazed openings in the exterior walls (other than<br />

doors) so that the entire exterior enclosure functions as specified, using windows and<br />

other opening elements as specified, without using components that must be installed at<br />

changes <strong>of</strong> season.<br />

2. The elements comprising exterior windows and other openings include windows, fixed<br />

glazing other than glazed walls, ventilation openings, protection devices for openings,<br />

and elements that form or complete the openings, unless an integral part <strong>of</strong> another<br />

element.<br />

3. Where exterior window and other opening elements also must function as elements<br />

defined in another element group, meet requirements <strong>of</strong> both element groups.<br />

4. Brand Names: Where brand names are listed, they represent the Basis <strong>of</strong> Design unless<br />

those items are identified as approved proprietary items in project requirements.<br />

B. Amenity and Comfort<br />

1. Thermal Performance <strong>of</strong> Elements Forming Exterior/Interior Separation: Per Code.<br />

2. Air Infiltration: Per Code.<br />

C. Appearance<br />

1. Sight Lines <strong>of</strong> Glazed Areas: Provide maximum glazing area with minimum interruption<br />

by framing members.<br />

2. Frames: Construct frames <strong>of</strong> openings to give a flush appearance without shadow lines.<br />

D. Health and Safety<br />

1. Fire Resistance: Rating as required to maintain fire resistance rating <strong>of</strong> exterior wall in<br />

which they occur.<br />

2. Operable Openings<br />

a. Where operable units are indicated, provide projecting in- or out-swinging units<br />

unless otherwise indicated.<br />

(1) Provide in-swinging projecting (“hopper”) units at all first-floor locations and<br />

other locations subject to pedestrian traffic unless otherwise indicated.<br />

b. Provide stops to limit openings so that a 5” diameter sphere will not pass through.<br />

Provide stops that require special tools for adjustment or removal.<br />

c. Provide insect screens to keep insects, birds, and animals out.<br />

3. Window guards and security guards are not required.<br />

E. Structure<br />

1. Lintels: Constructed to span openings and support loads imposed by exterior wall;<br />

maximum deflection <strong>of</strong> 1/720 <strong>of</strong> span, vertically and horizontally.<br />
