EXTERIOR DOORS AND GRILLES<br />

PERFORMANCE<br />

A. Basic Function<br />

1. Secure all openings in the exterior wall that function to allow the entrance and exit <strong>of</strong><br />

people, vehicles, and goods, so that the entire exterior enclosure functions as specified,<br />

using doors as specified, without using components that must be installed at changes <strong>of</strong><br />

season.<br />

2. The elements comprising exterior doors include doors <strong>of</strong> all sizes and uses, gates, and<br />

elements that form or complete the openings, unless an integral part <strong>of</strong> another element.<br />

3. Where exterior door elements also must function as elements defined within another<br />

element group, meet requirements <strong>of</strong> both element groups.<br />

4. Brand Names: Where brand names are listed, they represent the Basis <strong>of</strong> Design unless<br />

those items are identified as approved proprietary items in project requirements.<br />

B. Amenity and Comfort<br />

1. Thermal performance: In accordance with codes and referenced standards.<br />

2. Air infiltration: Maximum <strong>of</strong> 1.0 cfm/ft <strong>of</strong> crack length, measured in accordance with<br />

ASTM E 283-2004 at differential pressure <strong>of</strong> 1.57 psf.<br />

3. Water penetration: Door openings are exempt from water penetration requirements <strong>of</strong><br />

Section B and B20.<br />

4. Transparency<br />

a. Provide fully glazed pedestrian doors at building entrances.<br />

b. Provide pedestrian doors at building exits and exits from stairways to exterior with<br />

vision panels <strong>of</strong> at least 5 percent <strong>of</strong> door area.<br />

5. Convenience and Accessibility<br />

a. Door handles and knobs: As required by code; where code and other requirements<br />

allow an option exit devices must be provided.<br />

b. Mode <strong>of</strong> operation: Self-closing, with manual hold-open, unless otherwise indicated.<br />

(1) Main entrances: <strong>Manual</strong>, with power-assisted operation where required by codes<br />

and referenced standards.<br />

c. Power-Assisted and -Operated Door Control<br />

(1) Provide local actuators on each side unless otherwise indicated.<br />

(2) Use least obtrusive method <strong>of</strong> control/actuation possible.<br />

6. Appearance<br />

a. Doors at building entrances: Match glazed wall framing.<br />

b. Other pedestrian doors: Provide factory-applied paint finish in custom color(s).<br />

(1) Provide factory-installed insulated lites where indicated.<br />
