Intuitively, the measurement of biomarkers for
cancer screening has great appeal. However,
those markers which have been most widely
studied for cancer screening have been disappointing
as regards reducing mortality from
cancer, especially in asymptomatic populations.
The real utility of biomarkers in screening looks
more likely to be in high-risk populations, where
the prevalence of cancer is high. One example
of this is the use of human chorionic gonadotropin
for screening for gestational trophoblastic
neoplasia in patients who have had a previous
diagnosis of a hydatidiform mole.
