Thompson Creek Detailed Flood Reduction Study City of Peterborough • There are a limited number of anecdotal observations of water levels during the July 2004 storm. These can be used to check the hydraulic model simulation of that event. Although limited in number, this was not judged to be a critical data gap. Water quality data is generally quite limited. However, when supplemented with some observations of temperature and dissolved oxygen collected during fish habitat surveys during this study, it was sufficient to generally characterize Thompson Creek water quality conditions. Available biological data was found to be very limited and insufficient to complete the characterization of existing conditions and permit an assessment of potential impacts/benefits of any proposed flood protection options. Hence the work program included field investigations to characterize the fish communities and fish habitat of Thompson Creek and to identify vegetation communities such that Ecological Land Classification mapping of the riparian corridor could be completed and bird and wildlife populations could be identified.. In summary, a number of data gaps were identified which were judged to be sufficiently critical that a series of field investigations were required so that this study could proceed to a reasonable conclusion. These programs were completed and are described in subsequent sections of this report. 3.3 NATURAL ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES The existing natural environmental resources which may affect the development of a detailed flood reduction plan or conversely be affected by the implementation of such a plan are described in the following sections. 3.3.1 Fish Community and Fish Habitat Thompson Creek originates at a dam on the Trent Canal located 400 m northeast of Scollard Drive and generally flows in a southwesterly direction eventually discharging into the Otonabee River approximately 300 m west of Armour Road. For the purposes of this report, Thompson Creek has been divided into four reaches that have been informally named Reach 1, Reach 2, Reach 3 and Beaver Pond (Figure 3.3.1). Reach 1 originates at the Trent Canal dam and flows in a westerly direction to the Beaver Pond located approximately 300 m downstream. Reach 2 originates at the Beaver Pond and flows in a southwesterly direction to Armour Road where Thompson Creek crosses 14-06605-01-W01 City of Peterborough 15
