Thompson Creek Detailed Flood Reduction Study City of Peterborough stream may be intersected in its watershed and provide sustained baseflows which would not be present from only local recharge. The Soil Survey of Peterborough County (Ontario Soil Survey Report No. 54 provides a description of the geology and surficial soils of the study area. Additional information was also avalailable from the recent geotechnical studies of the Waverly Heights area. The bedrock is limestone of the Trenton Formation from the Ordovician period. It was reported to be between 0.8 m and 2.4 m below the ground surface in the south east sector of the Thompson Creek watershed (Trow, 2006). The surficial geology consists of till plains which have been drumlinized and fluted by historical glacial activity. The till is thick, moderately stony, calcitic limestone till. The water table was reported to be between 0.8 m and 2.4 m below the ground surface in the Waverley Heights area (Trow, 2006). The Peterborough County Soil Survey map indicates the soils consist of Otonabee loam (Ol-B2) on south side of Thompson Creek (Waverly Heights area). Along the creek itself, it indicates undifferentiated, poorly drained organic soils (O). On north side it indicates Cramahe sandy gravelly loam (Cs-C2). In the golf course area there is a sliver of Emily loam (El-B4). Although mapping does not cover all the study area to Parkdale Rd., it implies a continuation of the Otonabee loam through the area.. Figure 3.3.6 shows the surficial soils of the Thompson Creek study area. This information was used during the development of hydrologic models to ensure the appropriate runoff characteristics are reproduced (See Section 4.4). 3.4 SOCIO-ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT 3.4.1 Existing Land Use The Thompson Creek watershed lies within the northeast quadrant of the City of Peterborough within the Ashburnham Ward (4) of the City. Figure 3.4.1 indicates the distribution of designated land uses within the study area based upon the Official Plan. These vary from residential to local commercial to major open space. It should be noted that not all of the designated residential and commercial lands have been developed at the time of this report. Figure 3.4.2 is an aerial photograph that shows the existing limits of development. Table 3.4.1 shows the percentage of each land within the main Thompson Creek drainage area and the local areas draining to the Otonabee River. The importance of mapping and quantifying this information is that each land use has a different potential to generate storm runoff and must be considered in the hydrologic modelling (Section 4.4). 14-06605-01-W01 City of Peterborough 30
