Persons who face danger <strong>in</strong>clude those who are pregnant, fortune-tellers<br />
(Me Arak), the Krak Shrok Sen Phum and people who have traditional gongs or<br />
jars. This sacrifice is held when a woman who has never been married becomes<br />
pregnant before be<strong>in</strong>g wed or engaged.<br />
Those deemed guilty must go from house to house to apologise and purge<br />
bad luck from the households with affected people or people fac<strong>in</strong>g danger.<br />
The guilty <strong>in</strong>dividuals must take pig’s blood to pa<strong>in</strong>t the respective house steps<br />
and utter words reject<strong>in</strong>g bad luck and ask<strong>in</strong>g best wishes, then give a piece<br />
of pork to the victims. In cases where the guilty persons are too young and/or<br />
timid, this can be performed by proxy by their parents.<br />
Char Brieng<br />
The villagers conduct this sacrifice when someone has died as a result of<br />
an accident – get brieng. It is conducted <strong>in</strong> order to pray to the spirits and to<br />
reject bad luck while recover<strong>in</strong>g good luck. In this sacrifice, at least one cow<br />
or buffalo is sacrificed and a chicken and jar of w<strong>in</strong>e is offered. The Krak Shrok<br />
and Teungkang Krak will take animal blood and pa<strong>in</strong>t the toes of all attend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the funeral, so that the bad luck will not spread to others.<br />
4.7.3 Beliefs<br />
Trespass<strong>in</strong>g on sacred ground<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce Kameng village was established, villagers have found areas which they<br />
believe are sacred and have named them spiritual forests/mounta<strong>in</strong>s. These are<br />
places which the spirits look after and do not allow anyone to enter or destroy<br />
<strong>in</strong> any way. These <strong>in</strong>clude Gong Mount, Beureu Mount and Bro Mount which<br />
are large jungles with deep forests, large trees and many animals. No one is<br />
allowed to touch these forest areas lest s/he or anyone <strong>in</strong> the village becomes<br />
sick, wounded, or dies. ‘Touch<strong>in</strong>g the forest’ refers to acts such as cutt<strong>in</strong>g down<br />
trees, clear<strong>in</strong>g land, hunt<strong>in</strong>g, digg<strong>in</strong>g for m<strong>in</strong>es and other non-timber forest<br />
product collection. If someone needs to enter such forest/mounta<strong>in</strong>s, s/he must<br />
ask permission from the Krak Shrok to pray to the spirits and ensure there will<br />
be no problems.<br />
