A bet-swear test<br />
Traditionally, villagers use a bet-swear test to end disputes and uncover the<br />
truth when either party claims <strong>in</strong>nocence or refuses to confess. Bett<strong>in</strong>g is<br />
important <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g one’s honesty and reputation. The loser is penalised<br />
<strong>in</strong> accordance to the bet agreed before the test. To ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> credibility there<br />
is a swear<strong>in</strong>g of an oath to the spirits before the test, affirm<strong>in</strong>g that only the<br />
honest party will w<strong>in</strong>. Bet-swear tests can <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />
Pour<strong>in</strong>g boil<strong>in</strong>g liquid lead onto the palm<br />
Before this proceed<strong>in</strong>g, the Krak Shrok sacrifices a chicken and a jar of w<strong>in</strong>e to<br />
praise the spirits. Then, the Krak Shrok proceeds to pour boil<strong>in</strong>g liquid-lead onto<br />
the palms of the two parties. The palm of the honest person will be able to<br />
withstand the heat and pour the lead off without gett<strong>in</strong>g burned, while that<br />
of the culprit or thief will get burned by the lead often burn<strong>in</strong>g a hole straight<br />
through the palm. This person is considered the loser of the bet-swear test.<br />
Villagers claim that they have heard of this type of test from their elders but<br />
have never witnessed it, as it is not practiced today.<br />
Break<strong>in</strong>g a bamboo water conta<strong>in</strong>er<br />
Prior to proceed<strong>in</strong>g with the test, a sacrifice of a chicken and w<strong>in</strong>e to the spirits<br />
is performed by the Krak Shrok. A segment of bamboo cyl<strong>in</strong>der filled with water<br />
is placed between the two contestants. After pray<strong>in</strong>g to the spirits, the<br />
