Bet-swear test: A test to f<strong>in</strong>d who the guilty party is<br />

Chap: A traditional scale of measurement for a pig. This is done by measur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the diameter of a pig’s stomach us<strong>in</strong>g a piece of str<strong>in</strong>g. Measurements are<br />

then taken by fold<strong>in</strong>g this str<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> half (i.e. the length is half the diameter of<br />

the str<strong>in</strong>g) and count<strong>in</strong>g the number of hand widths from the top to the<br />

bottom. The amount of chap corresponds to the number of hand widths <strong>in</strong> the<br />

length of the halved str<strong>in</strong>g from top to bottom. This <strong>in</strong>dicates the size of the pig,<br />

and thereby its worth<br />

Char Brieng: A sacrifice performed when there has been an accidental death<br />

Chreh: A condition when ones soul is said to separate from the body temporarily,<br />

often dur<strong>in</strong>g times of fear or trauma. It is said that the soul will then try to f<strong>in</strong>d its<br />

way back to the body.<br />

Chrob chroloc: Rape<br />

Chrolab Chreh: A sacrifice ask<strong>in</strong>g for a person’s soul to return to the body<br />

Get brieng: Accidental death<br />

Kanong: A mediator; a person who assists <strong>in</strong> resolv<strong>in</strong>g conflict<br />

Krak Shrok: Traditional village leader<br />

Krak Shrok Sen Phum: Elder who organises village sacrifices; the highest<br />

rank<strong>in</strong>g Krak Shrok <strong>in</strong> the village<br />

Krak Shrok Tatch<strong>in</strong>: Elder who mediates and conciliates disputes with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

village (also called Katkdi)<br />

Krang: To stay <strong>in</strong> the house, not be able to go out and disconnect with outsiders<br />
