1. GEOGRAPHICAL DATA<br />

1.1 The AD is located on the N shoreline of<br />

the Crete island 2.5nm E from the city<br />

harbour. Built-up area direct W with an<br />

OBST 130ft (Church) close to the AD.<br />

Mountainious terrain in all directions. S<br />

and SE the terrain immediately rises to<br />

heights of 400ft to 1000ft with<br />

spotheights up to 974ft. Further within<br />

10nm terrain rises to 2000ft with<br />

spotheights to SE 1768ft, to S 2661ft<br />

and to W 2628ft.<br />

2. WEATHER<br />

2.1 Mediterranian climate with hot, dry summers<br />

and very mild, rainy winters. Mean<br />

MAX/MNM temperature +29,2/+21,5°C,<br />

+15.6/+8,8°C in JUL/JAN respectively.<br />

2.2 Summer. From mid MAY until mid<br />

SEP prevailing N dry wind with fine<br />

weather. During JUL/AUG wind W/NW<br />

tending to be very strong, strength falling<br />

off at night. Temperature during the<br />

period is rather hot with MAX in JUL/<br />

AUG. Afternoon temperatures of 35°C<br />

to 40°C are not uncommon. Occasional<br />

ST and possibility of CB during the afternoon.<br />

2.3 Winter. Frontal systems from W.<br />

Linesqualls and thunderstorms occuring.<br />

Wind from W/SW.<br />

2.4 Seasonal Phenomena. MAR-MAY, AUG-<br />

OCT seasonal extreme SSE winds exceeding<br />

20kt prevail over and at the vicinity<br />

of the AD. When these winds prevail,<br />

the following phenonema, affecting<br />

seriously the flights safety, are observed:<br />

- Severe turbulence on the short finals,<br />

TKOF and initial TKOF climb path area<br />

as well as the entire length of RWY 09/<br />

27.<br />

- Vind direction varies from 150-190° at<br />

the beginning of RWY 27 and from 170-<br />

210° at the beginning of RWY 09.<br />

- The SSE winds are gusty at their initial<br />

appearance.<br />

- Pilots are urged to volunteer reports of<br />

these phenomena to TWR or APP, so<br />

that the pilots of succeeding ACFT can<br />

be warned.<br />

- Experience has shown cause for conservative<br />

judgement when estimating<br />

possibility of safe landing in such winds.<br />
