GEOGRAPHICAL DATA 1.1 The AD is located on the N shoreline of the Crete island 2.5nm E from the city harbour. Built-up area direct W with an OBST 130ft (Church) close to the AD. Mountainious terrain in all directions. S and SE the terrain immediately rises to heights of 400ft to 1000ft with spotheights up to 974ft. Further within 10nm terrain rises to 2000ft with spotheights to SE 1768ft, to S 2661ft and to W 2628ft. 2. WEATHER 2.1 Mediterranian climate with hot, dry summers and very mild, rainy winters. Mean MAX/MNM temperature +29,2/+21,5°C, +15.6/+8,8°C in JUL/JAN respectively. 2.2 Summer. From mid MAY until mid SEP prevailing N dry wind with fine weather. During JUL/AUG wind W/NW tending to be very strong, strength falling off at night. Temperature during the period is rather hot with MAX in JUL/ AUG. Afternoon temperatures of 35°C to 40°C are not uncommon. Occasional ST and possibility of CB during the afternoon. 2.3 Winter. Frontal systems from W. Linesqualls and thunderstorms occuring. Wind from W/SW. 2.4 Seasonal Phenomena. MAR-MAY, AUG- OCT seasonal extreme SSE winds exceeding 20kt prevail over and at the vicinity of the AD. When these winds prevail, the following phenonema, affecting seriously the flights safety, are observed: - Severe turbulence on the short finals, TKOF and initial TKOF climb path area as well as the entire length of RWY 09/ 27. - Vind direction varies from 150-190° at the beginning of RWY 27 and from 170- 210° at the beginning of RWY 09. - The SSE winds are gusty at their initial appearance. - Pilots are urged to volunteer reports of these phenomena to TWR or APP, so that the pilots of succeeding ACFT can be warned. - Experience has shown cause for conservative judgement when estimating possibility of safe landing in such winds. 3.
