• Some transp<strong>or</strong>tation centres <strong>or</strong> parking facilities have<br />
been built in some urban centres and others are being<br />
designed. The capacity <strong>of</strong> these parking facilities is low<br />
compared to the actual demand.<br />
(b)<br />
Objective<br />
To alleviate the problems <strong>of</strong> inadequate parking space and<br />
thereby improve road capacity and road safety.<br />
(c)<br />
<strong>Policy</strong> Directions<br />
• The Government shall influence implementing agencies<br />
to conduct good land use planning and urban settlement<br />
patterns in <strong>or</strong>der to discourage the habit <strong>of</strong> parking<br />
vehicles along road carriageways in urban centers.<br />
Further m<strong>or</strong>e it should encourage construction and use<br />
<strong>of</strong> parking facilities in built up areas; At road junction<br />
and intersection, vehicles will be required to park far<br />
beyond intersection sight distance n <strong>or</strong>der to avoid visual<br />
obstruction and risk <strong>of</strong> accident during turning movement<br />
at the intersection;<br />
• The Prime Minister’s Office, Regional Administration and<br />
Local Government in collab<strong>or</strong>ation with the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />
Lands and Human Settlements Development shall design<br />
and develop urban areas and residential areas in tandem<br />
with provisions <strong>of</strong> adequate transp<strong>or</strong>t infrastructure;<br />
• The regional administrations and local government<br />
auth<strong>or</strong>ities shall address and facilitate the planning and<br />
approval process f<strong>or</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> private parking<br />
facilities;<br />
• The regional administrations and local government<br />
auth<strong>or</strong>ities shall discourage the use <strong>of</strong> private vehicles<br />
in urban centres and instead will encourage the use <strong>of</strong><br />
public transp<strong>or</strong>t so as to reduce traffic congestions on<br />
roads and hence improve road safety;<br />
• The Prime Minister’s Office, Regional Administration and<br />
Local Government in collab<strong>or</strong>ation with the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />
